Colin Hunter
The Old Mill

19th century

About the Item

The Old Mill is a 19th century oil painting on board by Scottish artist Colin Hunter, (1841-1904). Hunter was a member of the Royal Academy with the title ARA on the nameplate of this work. Born in Glasgow, Hunter lived by the Clyde River where he grew up sketching from nature. The Old Mill is painted in fine detail, with the stream rapids and waterfalls between cliffs. The old water mill and stone buildings perch on the waters edge in this picturesque scene. The painting is done in earthy tones and greens, with the central waterfall and rapids. Old stone buildings and the water wheel are featured beside the water. After schooling, Hunter became a clerk in a shipping office in Glasgow. There he met artists and a journalist that encouraged him and taught him landscape painting. His work by the sea and his plein art outdoors painting like this one, led to a body of work in landscapes, seascapes, beaches and harbors. After four years as a clerk, Hunter became a full time artist, exhibiting in the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art and Royal Scottish Academy. By 1868 Hunter was producing notable work, and in 1884 he became an Associate with the Royal Academy in London, (ARA). He exhibited widely, with more than 100 paintings exhibited and sold in Berlin, Vienna and Philadelphia as well as exhibits in the UK and particularly Scotland. His work is represented in museums and galleries. Over the years Hunter returned to Scotland nearly every year to paint, but lived in Kensington, London. He studied in Paris and traveled to Niagara Falls and the eastern US, but he is most known for his Scottish coastal paintings and fisher folk from the Scottish fishing villages. He also painted in Ireland, Devon, Cornwall, and in New York where he painted the Niagara Falls. Hunter is well versed in waterfall and coastal waters with rocks, and this painting demonstrates mastery of the waterfalls. The Old Mill is presented in a likely original 19th century wide gilt frame with relief pattern and inner lining. The painting is 18.5" high and 23.5" wide. The dimensions including the framing are 30" by 35". The frame has one outer area of loss touched up with gilt paint, but is otherwise in very good condition. The painting has a small wrinkle in the far upper left corner, and light craquelure visible under bright light in one or two areas. The central painting with waterfall, cliffs and old stone mill are in very good condition. Ready to take it home and hang it on your wall!

  • Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle
    Located in Hillsborough, NC
Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle is a landscape oil painting on board by 19th century artist Edward Train (1801 -1866). Train was a British artist, painting mostly landscapes in northern England and, like this one, in Scotland. The painting is signed E. Train (lower left) and dated 1850 or 1856, the last number being too faint to be certain. From 1850 to 1880 Train flourished as an artist, but his work was exhibited in galleries in northeastern England and Edinburgh from the 1830s. Born in Gateshead, Tyneside, Train left to take an apprenticeship with a London engraver. In the 1830s Train traveled with an expedition to the Hebrides and Shetland Islands. Here he became fascinated with the Scottish scenery that would become part of his repertoire of landscape art. Loch Awe lies in the west of Scotland in Argyll and Bute. Kilchurn Castle, built in the 16th century, lies on a peninsula inside the Loch, on the water's edge. Train would have traveled to the Highlands and painted the dramatic scene from the east banks of Loch Awe, across from the Castle. This painting captures the Highland mountains, loch and castle that was very much the ouevre of this artist's work. Train painted the Highlands decades before other renowned landscape artists of the 19th century, such as Alfred de Breanski, Louis Bosworth Hurt, Douglas and Duncan Cameron...

    By Nicholas Berger
    Located in Greenwich, CT
American, b. 1949 In his more than three decades as an artist, Nicholas Berger (b. 1949) has created an outstanding body of work that continues to evolve and excite viewers. Best known for his industrial, waterfront scenes of New York between 1930-1970, Berger effortlessly captures a period when the technology and landscape of the city was rapidly changing. Although he paints scenes of a bygone era, Berger draws inspiration from the waterfronts near his home in New York’s Hudson River Highlands as well as historical sources in museums. Berger holds BFA and MFA degrees from Alfred University. Earlier in his career, the artist painted representational landscapes rendered in watercolor, a medium in which he achieved great success, sharing a sellout two-person show in Tokyo with Andrew Wyeth. In the mid-2000s, Berger transitioned to his signature industrial scenes of the city, employing oil on panel in a painterly manner influenced by the Hudson River and Brandywine schools...
