"Mending the Bank" 1899 - English Pastoral Oil on Linen by David Bates. Highly detailed country landscape with farmers and animals by a riverbank by David Bates (English 1840-1921). Two farmers are working at the bank of a river, with the assistance of two horses hooked up to a cart. In the far background at the horizon there are some small buildings. At the top of the scene, a dramatic sky is full of clouds.
Signed and dated "David Bates 1899" in the lower right corner

Presented in an ornately carved giltwood frame.

Originally from Cambridge, Bates transitioned from a porcelain painter at Royal Worcester to a professional full time artist in 1880. His works were exhibited Royal Academy, Grosvenor Gallery, Royal Society of British Artists and the New Watercolor Society in London, and at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artis David Bates was an English landscape artist who painted in oils and water color. He was born in Cambridge, and from 1855 worked as a porcelain painter at the Royal Worcester porcelain works in Worcester - where he came to specialize in painting flowers. He left his employment there in 1880 to become a full-time professional painter.
Bates was an "open-air" rural landscape artist, painting in the Midlands, Scotland and Wales, and abroad in Switzerland and Egypt. His work shows the influence of Benjamin Williams Leader, Joseph Thors and Samuel Henry Baker, and Bates is associated in style with the Birmingham School of artists.
Bates exhibited many works at the Royal Academy, Grosvenor Gallery, Royal Society of British Artists and the New Watercolor Society in London, and at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. His works are currently on display in Liverpool museum, Worcester City Museum, and several other art galleries.
His son, John Noel Bates (fl. 1870-1927), who adopted the professional name John Bates Noel, was also a notable landscape painter.
