2023

About the Item

Known for his use of paint; Don Sahli's brush stroke is exciting and carries a positive emotion to the viewer. His work is diverse carrying many labels including plein air, impressionist, colorist, realist, luminous, modern, and contemporary. His work is heavily influenced by the Russian Impressionistic masters including his mentor Sergei Bongart. "Powerful Peace" is a prime example of his work measuring 60x72. In this painting, you travel across a winding blue road through a beautiful lush green landscape. The sun is rising with golden rays shining through the blue sky and peaking through the white clouds. Rather than just reproducing the object or telling a story, Don Sahli creates his images with the dramatic and subtle use of color. The viewer's eye sees the vivid color and reacts to the color creating each perception to be unique. Sahli's paintings are also filled with the contrasts of heavy textured brushstrokes to soft fluid washes. All of his paintings create an emotional interaction between the viewer and the painted image.

Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888. There he met and married an English girl, Annie Burt. Upon returning to New York, he tried his hand at etching, making tools from old saw blades...
