Doris Lyons Hoover (American, 1927-2014) was born in Fort Payne, Alabama, on Oct. 8, 1927, on her grandparents' farm. She was raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and attended college at the University of Chattanooga, (now UTC) where she received honors in ar. At U.C. she met her husband Jack Hoover, and the couple moved to Palo Alto in 1954.
Doris Hoover became a nationally known fabric artist, teacher, lecturer and co-founder of the Peninsula Stitchery Guild, a leading organization in the Bay Area Crafts Movement of the 1970s. Her beautiful, often playful quilts, soft sculptures and creative stitchings grace homes, offices, and museums throughout California and beyond. She also authored "Too Hot to Handle: Potholders and How to Make Them," and co-authored "Tassels," another how-to book. Art permeated Hoover's life, and both her home and garden were a constantly evolving visual feast enjoyed by friends and family. An archive of her work in fabric art has been established at Vanderbilt University.

- High Sierras Log Cabin Lodge with Poppies Original Painting by J. Bond FranciscoLocated in Soquel, CAHigh Sierras Log Cabin Lodge Original Oil Painting by J. Bond Francisco Early 1900s era impasto painting of the High Sierras and a Log Cabin Lodge by California artist John Bond Francisco (American, 1863 - 1931). Well painted landscape of early 20th century California High Sierras will lush green grass and California Poppies. Signed lower right "J. bond Francisco." Presented in a newer, custom, giltwood frame. Image, 12"H x 16"W Frame 23.5"H 19.5"W x 1.25"D John Bond Francisco was born in Cincinnati, OH on Dec. 14, 1863. From an early age Francisco was drawn to both music and art. He studied the violin with Hermann Eckhardt and painting at the Cincinnati Art Academy for several years. He arrived in Los Angeles in 1887 and was so taken with the beauty of the place, he opted to make it his home. He soon continued his studies in Berlin, Munich, and in Paris at Académies Julian and Colarossi under Courtois, Bouguereau, and Robert-Fleury. While in Europe he studied the violin in the morning hours and painting in the afternoon. Upon returning to Los Angeles in 1892, he married and built a home at 1401 Albany Street where he lived for the rest of his life. Combining an art and music career, he helped form the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra in 1897 and served as their first concert master. While teaching music and art at his studio, he made painting excursions into the surrounding countryside, often with his pupil Elmer Wachtel. He combined his Munich technique with that of the Barbizon's influence to produce paintings of California deserts and mountains that held dramatic light and shade contrasts. Later his palette brightened and he leaned more toward Impressionism. Francisco's studio in the Blanchard Bldg and his home were a mecca for both painters and musicians until his death on Jan. 8, 1931. Member: American Artists Club (Munich); Calif. Vibrant blue Pacific waves crash along Carmels white sands, with a walk way on the cliffs above. A lush green sycamore tree is seen to the left, beyond the cliffs. Vibrant greenery is seen on either side of the walkway, depicting colors of greens, yellows, and browns. Signed "Charles Harmon 1927" lower left. Charles Henry Harmon was born on December 23, 1859 in Mansfield, Ohio. He moved to San Jose, California with his family in 1874 and at an early age was apprenticed to local portrait painter Louis Lussier. He later spent one year working in a local photography studio re-touching negatives. His youth was spent visiting the art galleries of San Francisco and, with no formal training, he began sketching and painting in 1883 in the beautiful Santa Clara Valley. He painted many landscapes of that area and made trips to the remotest parts of the Sierra and the Monterey Peninsula where he painted many coastal scenes. He began exhibiting in San Jose in the 1880s. By the turn of the century, his works were handled exclusively by Gump's and he was recognized as one of California's foremost painters. In 1905 he established a studio in Denver and for seven years concentrated on the rugged landscape of the Rocky Mountains. While there, the Santa Fe, Western Pacific, and Colorado, Midland railroads commissioned him to paint scenes along their routes. After his time in Colorado, he returned to San Jose where he remained for the rest of his life. Harmon died there on October 14, 1936 and is buried in Oak Hill...Category

- "Incoming Tide, Spooners Cave" contemporary realist landscape en plein airLocated in Sag Harbor, NYAn oil painting of high tide at Spooners Cove, California. Artist Bio Joseph Paquet, while pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York, had the good fortune of finding mentors in artists James McMullan and John Foote who opened his eyes to the joys of drawing the human figure. After graduating, Paquet met another major influence in his life, John Osborne, who was uniquely gifted artist and teacher. Osborne believed that a landscape painting should begin on location, but that its poetic essence should be completed in the solitude of the artist's studio. Paquet experienced a demanding and rewarding apprenticeship, in which he learned to fuse field studies with the image he could see in his mind's eye. Increasingly however, Paquet is creating most of his work from life, believing that the direct correspondence with nature increases the potential for greater feeling. "Intellect, he says, doesn't keep one warm at night." He has been featured in the Washington Post Sunday Magazine, The Artist's Magazine, American Artist, Southwest Art and Plein Air Magazine. Paquet's awards include both Artist's Choice and Collector's Choice from The 2007 Laguna Beach Plein Air Invitational as well as the 2008 Alden Bryan...Category
