Cox of the Chicago Art Institute and later studied with Charles Horton and majored in art at the San Jose State College.
Exhibitions of Stanhope's works, which included oil, watercolor, and graphic art, have been held at the Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco; the California State Fair and Alameda County Fair, where in 1948, he won first prize for his watercolor painting, "Zinnias." His works have been shown at Oakland Art museum and De Young and Crocker galleries in San Francisco and at shows in Carmel, Santa Cruz and Vallejo.
