About the Item
A large marine painting probably depicting a British East Indiaman ship returning from a voyage to the East, attributed to British artist Francis Holman (c1720-1790). Born in Ramsgate, England, Holman was immersed in the maritime world from a young age, with his younger brother, Captain John Holman (1733-1816) running the family shipping business. His early works were mostly portraits of ships commissioned by their captains, but later on he turned his attention to painting ships of the Royal Navy. Known to history for being the teacher of the maritime artist, Thomas Luny (1759-1837), his unerring attention to detail and knowledge of the subject have left us with a valuable record of eighteenth century maritime life.
Oil on canvas, unsigned, and framed in an exceptional gilt gessoed shell decorated frame. The painting has had extensive restoration throughout; frame also with restoration. Dimensions: 35 in H x 50 in W, actual; 47.25 in H x 63.5 in W x 6.5 in D, framed. Ref:12878
