Frederick Richardson was an English painter, noted especially for his landscape and coastal scenes in oil and watercolors. He was talented, respected and successful and established strong ties with several areas of the UK.
He was born in Clifton, Bristol, on 9 December 1855, the second son of the Rev John Richardson, who was Rector of Sandy in Bedfordshire. Frederick Richardson was educated at Repton School, and after leaving school commenced training as a civil engineer at Crystal Palace in London. In 1877 he inherited a legacy which provided him with an annual income; this enabled him to abandon his career prospects as an engineer in order to study art. He travelled to Paris and became a student of Carolus Duran. Whilst in Paris he met a large number of fellow students, including John Singer Sargent, and future members of the Staithes Group.
On returning to England Richardson set up a base in his father’s rectory in Sandy. He used some of the outbuildings as a study and remained there until his father’s death in 1913. From his base in Sandy Richardson travelled extensively, painting landscapes and coastal scenes in Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Holland, France and Cornwall.
He became an active member of the Staithes Group, visiting the area in Yorkshire where his great-grandfather had been a ship’s chandler, every year. He took a full part in this important northern artists’ colony and exhibited his works with the Staithes Art Club and the annual exhibitions of the Yorkshire Union of Artists. At the turn of the century his elder brother inherited a property at Aislaby in County Durham and, as local vicar, was able to provide him with accommodation whilst he worked in the area.
Richardson was a close colleague of Laura Knight and her husband Harold and when they moved to Cornwall he also began painting there, and became associated with the Newlyn group of painters. Like them he favoured the practice of painting en plein air. He met his future wife whilst on a painting trip to Cornwall and they married in 1912, taking their honeymoon in Holland. A year later they settled in Bristol and went on to have two children.
Richardson became a central figure in the artistic circles of Bristol, becoming elected an Artist Member of the Bristol Savages in 1919 and becoming its President in 1923.
Richardson exhibited his works prolifically at all the major venues, including Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, the Royal Society of Bristol Artists, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolors, the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Royal West of England Academy and the Royal Academy London. His best works appear to have been his coastal scenes and fisherfolk.
He was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolors in 1893, a member of the Institute of Painters in Watercolor in 1897, a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1901, and the Royal West of England Academy in 1920.
He normally signed his paintings F S Richardson or with the initials FSR, but left many unsigned. One of his watercolors in in the permanent collection of the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Preston. An exhibition of Richardson’s work was held at Penlee House Museum in Penzance in 2017.
When not painting Richardson enjoyed fishing and golf. He died in Bristol on 22 April 1934.

This original oil on canvas is entitled Bomschuiten on the beach at Katjik Aan Zee. It is signed lower right. It depicts a scene on the beach, looking out into the sea at the Dutch seaside village of Katwijk ann Zee. The resort is located on the North Sea at the mouth of the Oude Rijn. It is situated in the municipality of Katwijk and the province of South Holland. In the period of 1870 to 1914, when this work would have been created, there was an artists’ colony there known as the Katjijk School. This was part of the international movement of impressionism and belongs to the Hague School.
Katwijk aan Zee was one of the coastal villages on this stretch of coast that did not have a harbor. The ships from these villages therefore had to be suitable to sail from the beach and land there again. They evolved to be simple barge like vessels with heavy duty flat bottoms so they could be walked through the surf on to the flat beaches. They were known in Dutch fishing circles as bomb barges and were used on the north and south Holland coastline. They had a limited lifespan compared to that of other seagoing vessels because of the nature of their use.
This painting shows half a dozen or so of these vessels lined up in the shallow waters to the left of the image, and another, nearer the shore, on the right side of the image. Each boat has a tall mast and white sails flying in the wind. From the apparent movement of the waves and clouds in the sky we see that conditions are bright and breezy. There is a small rowing boat with three figures on the shoreline, and three other figures are on the beach itself, likely occupied with the nets or catch from the larger vessels.

Previously with the Howard Roberts Gallery, Cardiff. Considered one of the best coastal painters of the 20th century, Gyrth Russell was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in April 1892. He was the youngest of 8 children. His father was a Canadian MP and a Supreme High Court Judge for Nova Scotia. At the age of fourteen, Russell began his artistic career at Halifax School of Art, and quickly graduated to the School of Art at Boston, Massachusetts. His first job was as a draughtsman in the Public Works Department of Canada, in Halifax. It was during this period he saw and sketched the cable ship Mackay Bennett returning to her Halifax Station, her decks piled high with coffins containing bodies found after the Titanic Disaster. In 1911 Russell left Canada to study at the Academie Julian and Academie Calorossi in Paris. In 1914 at the outbreak of War, he left France for London where he was commissioned, under the command of Lord Beaverbrook, as an official War Artist for the Canadian Sector, and spent most of 1918 in Northern France painting the landscapes and coasts travelled by the Canadian military during the conflict. During the course of the First World War he worked with amongst others, Augustus John, William Orpen & Frank Brangwyn, who greatly influenced him. Many of his earliest works are of landscapes and coasts travelled by the Canadian military in the conflict. During the War Russell also made etchings and poster prints for sale to help popularize and support the war effort abroad. He took part in the Canadian War Memorial Exhibition in London in 1919. Between the Wars, Russell earned his living as an artist in film studios, designing Railway Posters, Lecturing and Writing. He also illustrated books on the geography of Nova Scotia and Western Britain. Russell enjoyed considerable success between the Wars, exhibiting extensively at the major galleries, and was elected to membership of the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Painters and Watercolorists, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of Marine Artists as well as being an active member of the Langham...Category

- The Bather by Childe HassamBy Childe HassamLocated in New Orleans, LAChilde Hassam 1859-1935 American The Bather Signed and dated “Childe Hassam” (lower right) Oil on canvas Considered by many to be America’s foremost Impressionist painter, Childe Hassam composed his tranquil and intimate oil on canvas The Bather in the early years of the 20th century. The creation of the artwork aligns with a period of Hassam’s career where the artist’s palette was transforming, matching ever closer with the pale and pastel hues of French Impressionists like Claude Monet. Even the subject — a nude woman — represents a greater alignment with the Impressionist project, as artists of the movement and their non-mythological and non-biblical nudes still generated cries of indecency. With Hassam’s signature brushwork and attention to color, The Bather serves as a dream-like vision, serene and sensuous, of a young woman bathing in a lush forest. While the artist's skill for landscape painting is on display, it is Hassam's command of form, light and color that brings this canvas to life. He creates a captivating composition, placing the nude subject in the bottom left of the canvas. The soft, undulating curves of the woman's body in contrapposto and the glow of her fair skin are balanced by the strong verticals and deep earth tones of the tall trees to her right. Hassam delicately frames the nude in the vivid blues of the distant water, building luminous color that further draws the viewer’s eye and results in a somewhat voyeuristic appeal — endowing his nude with both a natural innocence and an intentional sensuality. Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Childe Hassam began his artistic career as a freelance illustrator, working for national publications such as Harper’s Weekly, Scribner’s Monthly, and The Century. His first solo exhibition of watercolors took place in Boston in 1883, and he quickly catapulted onto the international scene, winning a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. The year before the present work was created, he received the Webb Prize from the Society of American Artists for another landscape painted at Gloucester. Hassam would receive numerous other awards throughout his career, most notably the Gold Medal for Distinguished Services to Fine Art from the American Dealers Association. A true master, Hassam depicted a way of life characteristic of both American and French society, and his work elucidates a critical chapter in American art history. Today, his work resides in the Oval Office of the White House and in numerous important museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among others. This painting will be included in Stuart P. Feld's and Kathleen M. Burnside's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
