About the Item

Eve Audierne Mountain View Landscape Oil Painting Artist signed lower right corner, Oil on canvas, 1920's, size 25 1/2" x 21 1/4", framed 32 1/2" x 28 1/4" GALE TURNBULL was born December 19, 1986, Long Island City, New York. He attended Pratt Institute and the College of New York, which he left without graduating to devote himself entirely to painting. Since 1912, Turnbull lived in Paris and during the summer in PONT CROIX –FINESTERE. Here, as well as in the picturesque Province and Normandy, Gale Turnbull created his most beautiful and important paintings of his career. Gale Turnbull formed, and later was voted the secretary of a group of artists called, the AMERICAN PAINTERS of PARIS. Among the many active artists were JULES PASCIN, O. CHAFFEE, W. J. GLACKENS, F. C. FRIESEKE and others. Artists living in USA, who joined as corresponding members were: ROCKWELL KENT, A. MAURER, D. KARFUNKLE and more. Gale Turnbull had many one-man shows. He exhibited at the famous SALON d’ AUTOMME, and DURAND RUEL Gallery in Paris, as well as at many local and national shows. A major one-man show featuring his strong featured and colorful paintings was held at a major New York Gallery. Gale Turnbull also participated in the important showing of the AMERICAN PAINTERS of PARIS in the BROOKLYN MUSEUM of ART in 1927. His painting “SUMMER FINISTERE“ was purchased by the Museum from this show. The French Government bought his painting “LES OLIVIERS” for the MUSEE d’ART MODERNE de Paris, in 1926. A French critic in reviewing his one-man show in Paris, said: "Mr. Turnbull makes a very careful use of line and brings a thousand subtleties from what seems at first sight to be generalized strokes. His Breton peasants and fishermen have the angular strength of their race emphasized by strong solid colors, while in the Provence and Riviera scenes he has secured warmth and delicacy."
