About the Item

Gustave BOURGAIN Paris, 1856 - Paris, 1921 Oil on paper 33 x 24 cm (44 x 35cm with frame) Signed above right "G. Bourgain" Excellent condition Gustave studied with Jean-Léon Gérôme and he exhibited at the Salon from 1880. He worked also for the newspaper L'illustration and was part of Alexandrian expedition in 1882 and that in Russia for the coronation of the Tsar Alexander III in 1883. Already a great lover of navigation and fishing, he became an official painter of the Navy in 1883. He painted many scenes of the life of sailors on French official ships. He also painted views of his journeys in the Middle East and our painting is a view of Cairo which may date from his stay in Egypt in the 1880s. It is a scene taken out of Cairo with locals walking on the street and with the view of a beautiful palace in the background. This sketch was used to paint the large painting exhibited at the Salon of French Artists in Paris by Bourgain in 1912 and untilted "Napoleon's entry into Cairo on July the 23rd 1798" This painting was sold at Sotheby's New York on February the 22 1989 for 90,000 $ (hammer price). The architecture of the beautiful palace on the right and the shooting are clearly recognizable. In the composition of 1912, Bourgain added characters who let Bonaparte pass through the street on his horse with his suite. Of course there are also many more details in the large composition (1.50m by 1.20m). But our sketch has the freshness of a work made in situ (there were traces of thumbtacks in the paper in the corners).
