About the Item
This small watercolor by well known and listed artist Hartwell Leon Woodcock is most likely a scene in the Bahamas. Woodcock was born in Maine in 1853 and spent most of his life there, painting the New England coast and the Bahamas. Woodcock was educated in Boston and Paris, but returned to his home state of Maine, locating studios in Belfast and Searsport. For about 30 winters he went to Nassau, in the Bahamas where he produced a noted group of watercolors, this likely being one of them.
This watercolor measures 4 1/4” x 11” and is signed lower left and dated 1908. It features the lovely Caribbean coast with palm trees along the long curved beach. It is a bright day but with building clouds that may indicate a short tropical storm ahead. The watercolor appears to be in its original gold-tone matting and frame. The overall framed dimensions are 11 1/2” x 18 1/2”. The watercolor is in good condition, with fairly bright colors and only a very small amount of background toning. There doesn’t appear to be any foxing to the work. The matting and frame are in good condition.
