About the Item

Artist: Shapoval Ivan Leontyevich Work: Original oil painting, handmade artwork, one of a kind Medium: Oil on Canvas Style: Impressionism Year: 2007 Title: The End of Winter Size: 27.5" x 38.5" x 0.8'' inch, (70x97x3 cm) Unframed, Stretched on Wooden Bar, Gallery Wrapped, Ready to Hang. "The End of Winter" is an exquisite oil painting that captures the transition between the icy grasp of winter and the awakening of nature in a serene landscape. Painted with meticulous detail and a keen eye for atmospheric subtleties, this artwork invites viewers into a picturesque scene that emanates tranquility and the promise of new beginnings. At the forefront of the composition, a gently flowing river takes center stage, freshly thawed from the frigid grip of winter. Speckled with remnants of melting ice, the waterway glimmers under the soft, golden sunlight that filters through the changing seasons. The artist's careful brushwork beautifully renders the partially frozen surface of the river, where delicate ice formations cradle droplets of water, reflecting the surrounding world like fragmented mirrors. Stretching beyond the river, the landscape reveals a quaint village nestled amidst nature's embrace. With its rooftops and chimneys peeking out from behind leafless trees, the village emanates a sense of quiet resilience as it emerges from the hibernation of winter. The artist's skillful use of light and shadow highlights the architectural details of the village houses, casting warm hues upon the weathered facades. Dominating the background, a charming church steeple rises towards the heavens, acting as a focal point that draws the viewer's gaze. Its graceful silhouette stands tall against the vast expanse of the sky, symbolizing hope and spirituality. The artist skillfully captures the intricate details of the church's architecture, paying attention to its ornate windows and the fine lines of its bell tower. The sky above the landscape showcases the waning influence of winter, transitioning into the freshness of early spring. Combining shades of white and blue, the artist skillfully evokes the crispness of the air and the subtle variations of light that dance across the canvas. The celestial dome creates a harmonious backdrop for the scene, accentuating the sense of renewal and optimism that pervades the painting. "The End of Winter" is a remarkable testament to the artist's ability to capture the fleeting beauty of nature's transformations. Through masterful brushwork and a keen understanding of light, the painting immortalizes a moment of transition, where winter gives way to the enchantment of spring. It invites viewers to embrace the inherent hope and serenity that lies within the cycle of the seasons, evoking a deep appreciation for the ever-changing tapestry of the natural world. Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888. There he met and married an English girl, Annie Burt. Upon returning to New York, he tried his hand at etching, making tools from old saw blades...
