Jamestown, Virginia Landscape

1907

About the Item

John A Mooney is a Virginian artist who has been known to paint trompe loeil and landscape paintings. Born in Buffalo, New York, John A. Mooney (1843-1918) traveled to Georgia to enlist in the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the Civil War. After the cessation of hostilities, he remained in the South and began painting professionally in earnest. His paintings are known to be quiet landscapes, but experimented with many other styles. He is know to have painted scenes in Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. This painting brings to life this early Virginia town and has a simplistic color palette. The detail in the water reflection is truly remarkable. This painting comes with frame and is in excellent condition. It is signed and dated lower right.
