Lane Palmisano
'Sanctity, ' by Lane Palmisano, Oil on Canvas

2018

About the Item

This landscape painting depicts a calm, serene water view with a predominant cumulus cloud-filled blue sky of summer. A green tree-lined beach lane with pink flowers is the central focus of the painting inviting the viewer to enter the sandy trail and get lost in the warm, summer scene. Lane Palmisano is an imaginative oil painter enamored with the lush, luminescent properties of the medium. She is a multi-faceted colorist equally enthralled with landscape, figurative and still life genres. “Landscape has captivated me with its myriad color and perpetual movement," says Palmisano. Lane’s contemporary paintings combine a loose, impasto application using palette knife and brush along with glazing techniques, layering her “Spiritscapes” with delicate veils of paint. This process gives these paintings an unusual texture and shimmering luminosity. Lane’s evocative oil paintings are her personal tribute to the Impressionists… the artists of light. Her paintings are in private and public collections throughout the world. “When working from one’s imagination, a painting can only be coaxed…eventually you must follow it's life force, be it playful, forceful, or impulsive. Each painting deserves its own voice. I am searching for the eternal healing essence that color can achieve." -Lane Palmisano. After receiving her BA from Monmouth University and completing advanced painting studies at Old Dominion University, at age 22, Lane opened the Yearling Art Gallery in Norfolk, VA. There she began teaching drawing and painting. Soon after she instructed studio art at Tidewater Community College and Wesleyan College. In 1985 she migrated her studio and instruction to the Torpedo Factory Art Center (TFAC) in Alexandria, VA until 2012. After 40 years of teaching studio art and 27 vibrant years painting at the TFAC, Lane opened a new studio in Bluffton, SC., just west of Hilton Head Island.

  • 'Early Morning River Landscape, ' by Harry L. Hoffman, Oil on Canvas Painting
    By Harry L. Hoffman
    Located in Oklahoma City, OK
In this gilt wood framed oil on canvas waterscape, American Impressionist artist Harry Hoffman depicts the last moments of a morning sunrise over a river in predominant hues of lavender, purple, pink and blue. The sky is reflected in the water below with a sandy brown beach and large green tree in the foreground. Harry Leslie Hoffman was born in Cressona, a small community in Pennsylvania’s Schuylkill Valley. His mother was an amateur artist who encouraged her son to pursue a career in the arts. In 1893, Hoffman entered the School of Art at Yale University and studied with John Ferguson Weir, the son of Robert Walter Weir. After graduation in 1897, Hoffman moved to New York to continue his studies at the Art Students League. He also traveled to Paris and took classes at the Académie Julien. In the summer of 1902, Hoffman attended the Lyme Summer School of Art, in the town of Old Lyme on the Connecticut coast. The school was headed by Frank Vincent Dumond and was located in a boarding house owned by Florence Griswold. The school eventually grew into an artists’ colony and a center for American Impressionism. When Hoffman first arrived as a student, he was not permitted to stay in the house which was designated for the professional artists only. However, his outgoing personality soon won him many friends at the colony. In 1905, Hoffman settled in Old Lyme and worked as a full member of the artist colony. He was particularly influenced by Willard Leroy Metcalf, an Impressionist also working in Old Lyme. Fellow artists later fondly recalled Hoffman’s antics at the Griswold house, which included playing the flute and banjo, tap-dancing, singing humorous songs, and performing magic tricks. In 1910, Hoffman married another Old Lyme artist named Beatrice Pope, and the couple had one child in 1921. Hoffman and his wife often escaped New England during the harsh winter months. In the winters of 1914 and 1915 he traveled to Savannah, Georgia with fellow Old Lyme artist William Chadwick...

  • The Bather by Childe Hassam
    By Childe Hassam
    Located in New Orleans, LA
Childe Hassam 1859-1935 American The Bather Signed and dated “Childe Hassam” (lower right) Oil on canvas Considered by many to be America’s foremost Impressionist painter, Childe Hassam composed his tranquil and intimate oil on canvas The Bather in the early years of the 20th century. The creation of the artwork aligns with a period of Hassam’s career where the artist’s palette was transforming, matching ever closer with the pale and pastel hues of French Impressionists like Claude Monet. Even the subject — a nude woman — represents a greater alignment with the Impressionist project, as artists of the movement and their non-mythological and non-biblical nudes still generated cries of indecency. With Hassam’s signature brushwork and attention to color, The Bather serves as a dream-like vision, serene and sensuous, of a young woman bathing in a lush forest. While the artist's skill for landscape painting is on display, it is Hassam's command of form, light and color that brings this canvas to life. He creates a captivating composition, placing the nude subject in the bottom left of the canvas. The soft, undulating curves of the woman's body in contrapposto and the glow of her fair skin are balanced by the strong verticals and deep earth tones of the tall trees to her right. Hassam delicately frames the nude in the vivid blues of the distant water, building luminous color that further draws the viewer’s eye and results in a somewhat voyeuristic appeal — endowing his nude with both a natural innocence and an intentional sensuality. Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Childe Hassam began his artistic career as a freelance illustrator, working for national publications such as Harper’s Weekly, Scribner’s Monthly, and The Century. His first solo exhibition of watercolors took place in Boston in 1883, and he quickly catapulted onto the international scene, winning a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. The year before the present work was created, he received the Webb Prize from the Society of American Artists for another landscape painted at Gloucester. Hassam would receive numerous other awards throughout his career, most notably the Gold Medal for Distinguished Services to Fine Art from the American Dealers Association. A true master, Hassam depicted a way of life characteristic of both American and French society, and his work elucidates a critical chapter in American art history. Today, his work resides in the Oval Office of the White House and in numerous important museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among others. This painting will be included in Stuart P. Feld's and Kathleen M. Burnside's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
