Beautiful mid-1940's impressionist southwest desert landscape by California artist Luther Evans Dejoiner (American, 1886-1954), 1945. Dejoiner depicts this expansive desert scene of Picacho Peak, Arizona in rich, painterly brushstrokes and a distinctive southwestern color palette. Luther Dejoiner lived locally in my area of Santa Cruz for many years. A well know artist and past president at the Santa Cruz Art League. His works are rare and prized among California art collectors.
Signed and dated "L.E. De Joiner" lower right.
Signed and dated 1945 in pencil on stretcher bar, with note "Picacho PK Arizona / bet Casa Grande and Tucson".
Displayed in a gold painted frame.
Linen size: 24"H x 30"W.
Born in Switzer, KY on Oct. 9, 1886. Raised in an artistic milieu, Luther was the son and pupil of painter Oscar DeJoiner. Moving to California with his family in 1894, he studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute in San Francisco and later with Arthur Hill Gilbert in Monterey. Most of his years in California were as a resident of Santa Cruz where he was highly regarded as a painter and a naturalist. During WWI he worked at Mare Island in the camouflage department. He traveled widely in the U.S. and is known for his luminous landscapes of redwoods. Associations: Society of Western Artists, American Artists professional League, Carmel Art Association, Santa Cruz Art League. Luther Evans DeJoiner died in Santa Cruz while fishing along the San Lorenzo River on Dec. 25, 1954.
