About the Item
"Paynes Gray Forest" is a framed oil on canvas painting by Marshall Noice, depicting an abstracted copse of trees with gentle foliage amid a gray blue background befitting its namesake. The vibrant pops of color suggest sunlit foliage and create additional depth.
This piece is finished in a silver floater frame with black along the frame's interior. Pricing includes the pictured frame. Unframed dimensions are 48 x 48 inches.
About the artist: Marshall Noice passionately admires western landscapes, and conveys that love through vibrant colors that illuminate his compositions. Residents of New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, and Noice’s home state of Montana may relate to the magnificent landscape he’s portraying in his luscious works. While painting is a natural form of expression for Noice, he began his artistic career as a photographer. In fact, he earned his living taking pictures for 23 years. Some of the work was figurative, but most of it was landscape photography. During the summer of 1977 he had the extreme privilege of being Ansel Adams’ workshop assistant, an experience that profoundly affected his life. It happened at an auspicious time when Noice was just getting into photography. “I learned how to see light from Ansel Adams,” he explains. “Adams was a great teacher. I really learned how to recognize landscapes through photography. I feel that my experience in photography has helped me to develop a heightened sensibility toward landscapes.”
Throughout the two decades Noice worked as a photographer, he painted landscapes. Painting was done for the sheer enjoyment of it and not for the thought of future sales. When a new work was completed, he put it into a storage shed with his growing collection. During the 1990’s Noice noticed himself wishing he could move trees in some of his photos or manipulate the images in some other way, which was a strong and obvious sign that he craved and needed to express more individuality through his artistic work. “I knew I would be ready to paint landscapes when I retired from photography,” he says. “But the shift happened more suddenly than I anticipated.” After years of viewing the landscape through black and white photos, Noice’s spirit longed to express the beautiful environment in which he lived with as much color as possible. Black and white gave way to gold, red, azure, purple, and kelly green.
"My paintings are made in response to things I see in the natural world. They capture a place at a particular time. And they capture a moment in my sensibility. My overriding goal as a painter is to create a work, an artifact if you will, that resonates with the spirit of the landscape that inspired me to begin painting." - Artist Marshall Noice

- Neucleus - 21st Century, Contemporary Art, Abstract, Oil Painting, Spray PaintBy Scott NaismithLocated in Barcelona, Catalonia"My recent work now becomes more involved with cloud cover and its effect on light and colour through both its translucent and opaque properties. Clouds are visible masses of water droplets or frozen ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. They have the ability to refract and reflect, creating an ever changing perception of light which inspires my use of colour. I am constantly referring to the paradox of a cloud’s perceived weight and its fragility and the relationship between the cool and warm colours created by it. I have become increasingly interested in catching the moment when heavy overcast clears to reveal clear blue sky, a cool colour that complements the warmth it brings. While the most obvious manifestation of light refraction at this time would occur in the form of a rainbow, I will be concerned with accentuating the infinite, more subtle effects. I find myself inspired increasingly by the works of Turner, who created ephemeral atmospheric effects using large washes of liquid paint. Other influences include Henry Matisse, Francis Cadell...Category
