A wonderful Danish landscape by Max Nathan (Danish, 1880 - 1952), c.1940. Oil on artist's board. Signed lower left corner "M. Nathan." Presented in wood frame. Image size: 20"H x 14.75"W. Framed size: 23"H x 18"W x 2.25"D Max Nathan painted naturalistic portraits, figure paintings, genre paintings, still lifes, flowers, interiors and landscapes with fields, forests and beaches. The early paintings figural representation, quiet image composition and unobtrusive colors seem influenced by the teacher Johan Rohdes tradition-bound style, while later of pictures more informal style, looser brushwork and stronger, more light-saturated colors testify to French influence. In women with white cap (1914) would indicate that a fine sign face and the background airy branching pattern of inspiration from Edouard Vuillards light, having the light-filled-family photos. Nathan lived for years in Mols, and this particular local landscapes were the inspiration for some of Nathan's best and most atmospheric landscapes. In Ns portraits used the color to support the characteristic of the model, and their objective recording analysis puts the close up of naturalism that was Nathan's favorite expression. A less known side of Nathan's production is woodcuts, where he sought the clean lines and clear contours.
