About the Item

MODEST URGELL Spanish, 1839 - 1919 CATALONIA LANDSCAPE signed “Urgell” (lower left) oil on canvas 27-1/4 x 51-1/4 in. (69 x 130 cm.) framed: 31-1/4 x 55-1/4 in. (79 x 140 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Collector, Barcelona Modest Urgell (Barcelona, 1839-idem, 1919) was a Spanish painter. He studied at the Lonja School, where he was a disciple of Ramón Martí Alsina. He spent a season in Paris, where he dealt with Gustave Courbet, and subscribed to realism. In the 1860s his works were rejected as too advanced in the exhibitions organized at the Lonja, and he also exhibited unsuccessfully in Madrid. In 1870 he went to Olot, where he became acquainted with Joaquín Vayreda, creator of a landscape school in this city of La Garrocha who influenced Urgell, dedicating himself mainly to landscape since then. Between 1870 and 1880 Urgell spent time in Gerona, in contact with his youthful friend Rafael Masó Pagés. He exhibited regularly at the Sala Parés since its foundation in 1877, and was successful in the national exhibitions in Madrid in 1876, 1892 and 1895, where he obtained the first medal with El Pedregal, a civilized town; he also won top decorations at the Barcelona exhibitions of 1894, 1896, and 1898, and participated in exhibitions in Philadelphia and Munich. Founder of the Artistic and Literary Society of Catalonia, since 1894 he was a landscape professor at La Lonja. His work focuses mainly on solitary landscapes and seascapes, with a sad and mysterious atmosphere, often with locations in cemeteries and hermitages, in a style sometimes compared to that of Arnold Böcklin. He was quite successful in his time, with work at the MNAC, at the provincial museums of Gerona, Palma de Mallorca and Lugo, at the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, etc. He collected reproductions of a good part of his work in the album Catalonia (1905). In 1902 he was appointed Academician of Fine Arts of Barcelona.

Channel. 1970, cardboard, oil, 108x73 cm Jadviga Žilvinska (1918-2010) was born in Tallinn. She grew up in Liepāja, where her great interest in art began and strengthened, which led the young artist to study at the Art Academy of Latvia. During her studies at the Academy, she studied with K. Ubāns, V. Tone and J. Liepiņš, and defended her diploma thesis under the guidance of L. Liberts. Later on, she devoted her entire life to art, working at the Liepāja School of Fine Arts and as a portraitist at the "Māksla" combine. She had four favourite themes: landscapes, portraits, flowers and sacred painting. Her works have lyricism and inner harmony. In the portraits, we see not only the outer form of a person, but the artist allows us to look into the very essence of a person - it is likely that the models themselves often saw something new and bright in themselves through the artist's vision. The works are executed in various techniques - tempera, oil, pastel and watercolour.
