Pascal Cucaro was a very well-known San Francisco artist. His painting style is characterized by a bold gestural quality, complimented by a thick application of paint. He was known for his depictions of circus scenes and landscapes. Comprised of brownish-purples and primary colors, his choppy strokes of impasto paint give a feeling of movement to his work. “Some may label me as impressionistic but categorizing a painter limits him and can sometimes prevent him from finding himself,” he once said. “A painter is always changing, revising his techniques and subjects so that it’s not really fair to put him under a title.” Born on November 6, 1915 in Youngstown, OH, he became interested in art during his time in the U.S. Army. After leaving the armed forces, Cucaro moved to San Francisco to study at the California School of Fine Arts from 1948 to 1952. He then returned to Europe to spend time in France, Spain, and Italy to study art on his own. Back in San Francisco, his association with the local counter culture led him to the circles of Beat-era artists, writers, and philosophers. In 1965, his paintings would garner him the Presidential Medal of. Freedom. He was later touted by San Francisco’s Chamber of Commerce, for “enhancing the prestige of San Francisco and the Bay Area as a major world culture center through his creative energy and work.” The artist died in January 2004 in Sausalito, CA.

Pascal Cucaro, 1915-2003
Pascal Cucaro was living in Marin County, across the Golden Gate bridge from San Francisco, and was still actively involved in his artwork before his death. He characterized his painting style by a bold gestural quality, complimented by a thick application of paint. In some cases, the artwork has paint so thick it seems to have been applied straight from the tube. After serving in World War II, he attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, then returned to Europe to spend time in France, Spain, and Italy to study art on his own. Cucaro constantly talked about only two things, painting and love. Those, he said, were his only interests. "I paint all the time, day and night. I have no television, no radio and only sometimes read the headlines of the newspapers." With dark, piercing eyes, a mobile face and expressive hands always on the move, the artist had painted for over 70 years.
He worked in the circus during his childhood summers -- the experiences giving him a lifelong interest in clowns and circus life that later influenced his art. He has traveled extensively abroad to find new inspirations for his work -- to Japan, Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka, China, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Tahiti, and throughout Europe. He has explored a variety of subjects: clowns, circus scenes, boats, street scenes, still lifes, coffee shops, crowd themes (what Cucaro calls "people-people" paintings) animals, abstracts, portraits, and mediums such as oils, acrylics, plastic, ceramics, watercolors, tempera, etchings, india ink, ink/wash, and prints.

Waldemar George observed in the 1950s that if "his early works were treated in a realistic style which sometimes borders on populism, the painter tries to free himself from it and reacts against a literary art...Category
