About the Item
A wonderful oil painting of the village of Aughagower, situated in Westport, County Mayo, western Ireland. A river flows from the heather-filled foreground to the village in the middle distance. Aughagower Round Tower can be seen just right of centre. Built between 973 and 1013, the tower would have once provided a defensive vantage point against raids from the north by the Danish, Norse-Gaels and raiding Irish clans. According to legend, the round tower capstone was struck by lightning and landed half a mile away on the hill of Tavenish. A local woman is said to have carried the heavy capstone in her apron to the church, where it still remains today. Presented in a linen slip and distressed gilt-effect wooden frame. Signed to the lower-left edge. Artist's label to the reverse which includes the date and location. On canvas board.
