The Judgement of King Solomon
Oil on copper (41 x 49 cm. - with ebonised and gilded wooden frame 58 x 66 cm.)
The proposed painting, executed in oil on copper, depicts the biblical episode known as the 'Judgement of King Solomon' and is taken from the Book of Kings, in the Old Testament (I Kings, 3, 16-28).
The work is derived from the painting in the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen depicting the 'Judgement of Solomon', which was largely created by Rubens' workshop with some intervention by the master.
The iconography of the painting was certainly made popular by the print made by the Dutch engraver Boetius Adams Bolswert (Bolsward, c. 1585 - Antwerp, 1633) now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum.
The extraordinary critical and illustrative success of the work is certain, of which several replicas and copies exist, preserved in museums and private collections: Delft, Rouen and Coutrai, Liechtenstein in Vaduz and in Seville Cathedral.
The prototype for the original Copenhagen painting...

Annunciation Bonini Paint Oil in canvas Old master 17th Century Leonardo Italy
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Girolamo Bonini, called Anconitano (Ancona, circa 1600 - Bologna 1680)
Annunciation (or Madonna of the Beautiful Angel)
Oil on canvas (115 x 91 cm. - Framed 134 x 108 cm.)
Work accompanied by the expertise of Prof. Emilio Negro
The work, undoubtedly commissioned as an object of private devotion, shows the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, a Gospel episode here set on the two figures portrayed in the foreground, the Archangel Gabriel with outstretched wings, a portrait of supernatural beauty, and the Virgin;
We see her here absorbed in reading a prayer book with her eyes turned humbly downwards as a sign of devotion, while a small cherub hands her white lilies, a symbol of purity and chastity.
In the upper part of the composition is the austere image of God the Father, with the dove radiating with light, emblem of the Holy Spirit, surrounded by a flock of angels fluttering in the clouds charged with intense glow and play of light, in full Baroque style.
It should also be noted that the image of the Saviour's mother in a delicately pious attitude, with her yellow veil, her broad blue mantle and her usual modest red dress from which the edges of her white blouse protrude, is to be interpreted as a kind of tender allegory of sacred love.
The painting in question is an interesting replica with variants of the composition commissioned from Francesco Albani for the Fioravanti chapel in the ancient church...

17th century Dutch Old Master - Summertime landscape of Kleve in 1661
Located in Antwerp, BE
17th century Dutch old master painting "A summer day in Kleve in 1661"
Our painting depicting a whimsical vibrant blue sky, was long believed to depict an Italian landscape. However, during archival research, an old identification referring to the city of Kleve emerged. Further research led to discovery of a very similar structure on a painting by Jan van der Heyden of Cleves from the vantage point of the Mühlberg.
Gerrit Berckheyde was born on June 6, 1638, in Haarlem, a bustling city in the Netherlands during the Dutch Golden Age. He was raised in a time of significant cultural and economic prosperity, which greatly influenced his artistic development. Berckheyde's passion for painting emerged at a young age, and he began his artistic journey under the tutelage of his older brother, Job Berckheyde, who was also a skilled painter. Under Job's guidance, Gerrit honed his skills and developed a keen eye for detail and composition. He showed a particular interest in capturing urban landscapes, drawn to the bustling streets and architectural marvels of cities like Haarlem and Amsterdam. Berckheyde's early works often depicted scenes of daily life, marketplaces, and cityscapes, reflecting the vibrancy and energy of Dutch urban centers. As Berckheyde matured as an artist, his style evolved, becoming more refined and sophisticated. He perfected his technique of rendering architectural elements with remarkable precision, paying close attention to perspective, light, and shadow. His paintings exuded a sense of realism and authenticity, transporting viewers to the heart of bustling city streets and market squares. Berckheyde's talent and artistic vision soon gained recognition, earning him commissions from prominent patrons and collectors. His works became highly sought after, not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their historical significance. Through his paintings, Berckheyde documented the urban landscape of his time, preserving a visual record of Dutch society during the 17th century.
Today, Berckheyde's paintings can be found in renowned museums and art collections around the world. In the Netherlands, his works are prominently displayed in institutions such as the Rijksmuseum and the Mauritshuis, where they continue to captivate audiences with their beauty and historical insight. Internationally, examples of his art can be seen in museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the National Gallery in London, where they contribute to the rich tapestry of Dutch Golden Age painting. Gerrit Berckheyde's legacy as a master of Dutch cityscape painting...

Moses Strikes the Water from the Rock. XVII cent. Dutch school.
Located in Firenze, IT
Moses Strikes Water from the Rock Dutch school, XVII century. Workshop of Jacob de Wet (Haarlem, 1610-1675).
Technique: Oil on oak wood panel, composed of 3 horizontal panels.
In this evocative work, Moses stands in a cave, gathering the Israelites. There was no water to drink or for their cattle. The people were discontented in the desert.
But Moses and Aaron listened to the voice of God. With Aaron’s staff, Moses struck the rock, and water gushed forth abundantly, quenching their thirst.
Jacob de Wet’s workshop specializes in subjects from the Old and New Testaments.
The recognizable rectangular format, simple compositions, and clear narratives define his style. The interplay of light and shadow, reminiscent of Rembrandt, adds timeless allure. The characters’ costumes, with their large hats and turbans...

Large 17th century religious family painting - Mary with Christ and Anna
Located in Antwerp, BE
17th century Old Master painting depicting the Infant Christ with Mary and St. Anne attributed to Nicolas de Liemaker
The artist of the present work wonderfully captured the loving gaze of Maria, looking in awe at her child. One can sense the tenderness and love in her eyes. The eyes of Christ appears to be filled with wisdom and love and a finely painted aura crowns his and his mother's heads. St. Anne, Mary's mother, gently holds the infant whilst gazing adoringly at him. The painting is not only a beautiful depiction of Christ and his mother and grandmother, but also a sweet image of the tender bond between a mother's and their children. The vibrant and soft colours of the fabric create a soft cocoon around the figures and seem to further emphasis the beauty and importance of the depicted scenery and its protagonists.
Nicolaas de Liemaecker (also spelled as Liemaker or Liemackere) was a Flemish painter born in Ghent in 1601. He was also known under the name Nicolaas Roose. His father was Jacobus de Liemaecker, a painter upon glass. Nicolaas is reported to have been trained by his father and Gaspard de Crayer II (1), an apprenticeship with Otto Van Veen has also been suggested. In 1624 he worked at the Court of the Bishop of Paderborn and for Ferdinand of Bavaria. He later returned to his native city, where he focused on religious and historical paintings. He was a very accomplished and celebrated artist who attained a high rank in his profession. He witnessed the baptisms of Pieter and Janne-Marie Van Hulle...

Shepherd with Sheep, Cows and a Goat in a Landscape by Jan Frans Soolmaker
Located in Stockholm, SE
This painting depicts a pastoral scene that is attributed to the artist Jan Frans Soolmaker, an artist known for his Italianate landscapes and scenes that often feature equestrian and Arcadian elements. The painting is not signed but is attributed to Soolmaker, relating it to a known signed work by the artist that was sold at Sotheby’s London in 1999.
The scene is suffused with the warm glow of a setting or rising sun, casting a soft light that is characteristic of Soolmaker’s landscapes. It shows a shepherd guiding a group of cattle across a shallow stream, with the animals taking center stage in the composition. The animals are rendered with careful attention to their forms and the play of light on their bodies, which is a hallmark of Soolmaker's work. The landscape is composed of a rocky terrain with trees and shrubbery, creating a sense of depth and natural beauty that invites the viewer to explore the scene further.
The background suggests a vast, open landscape with distant mountains, which adds to the Italianate feel of the painting. The sky is dramatic, with clouds catching the light of the sun, contributing to the overall serene yet dynamic atmosphere of the work.
The provenance of the painting is notable, having been in the possession of significant historical figures such as Swedish Prince Fredrik Adolf, and later The collection of Pär Ulmgren, The collection of Gösta Stenman, and Engineer and politician Gustaf Henry Hansson.
Potential buyers have the option of choosing between a newly made gold frame or an older brown frame, which allows for personalization in how the work is presented.
Soolmaker’s work is often compared to that of Dutch painter Nicolaes Berchem, whose style he emulated. Soolmaker's landscapes reflect a similar sensitivity to light and composition, making his works sought after for their beauty and historical significance.
