‘Sav Jon Beach’ is a large framed Impressionist oil on canvas seascape painting created by Vietnamese artist Pham Luan in 2004. Featuring a soft palette made of blue, beige and green, the painting is a true portrait of one of Vietnam’s many stunning beaches. The deep blue sky, with its fluffy clouds, takes up most of the composition and is delicately contrasted by the light color of the sandy beach. Three dinghies are patiently waiting for their owner. The use of diagonals created by the demarcation between the sand and water and the flags, is perfectly accented by the angled orientation of the strokes in the sky. The calm sea, only interrupted by the presence of a few white waves, the beautiful sky and strong shadows cast behind the dinghies, suggest a hot, clear summer day. The impressionistic technique gives an airy feel to the ensemble. Unframed, this large oil on canvas painting is signed lower right. Although he paints a variety of subjects, Pham Luan always returns to the subject of Hanoi, with its scenic location on the banks of the Red River, its lakes and ponds, the clarity of light, verdant greenery, elegant French architecture, and the wealth of its own culture. Engaging Pham Luan’s paintings is like reading a poem. At times, he chooses to remember Hanoi in its past beauty, devoid of the urbanization that is inevitably enveloping the city. His paintings are impressionistic in style - they also have a unique beauty to them, making apparent the artist’s compassion for the subjects he paints. With its exquisite seascape depiction and soft colors, this oil on canvas painting will bring a relaxed touch of elegance to any home, whether placed above a buffet, console table or sofa. Without its frame, this painting measures 35 x 40 inches. Born in Hanoi in 1954, Pham Luan’s road to becoming an artist collected around the world was anything but direct. Self-taught – via a painting manual written by Vietnamese master Nguyen Van Ty – Pham nonetheless wanted to attend art school. Given that the nation was in the midst of a civil war during much of his life however, art school was not in the cards. He attended a teacher’s school and in 1972 was conscripted for 3 years of military service. He continued drawing and painting throughout his time in the Army but nonetheless returned to the teacher’s college after his service. Finally, in 1990 after more than a decade teaching, Luan decided to quit and focus on art. He had his first solo show a year later and then a second three years later. The second solo show burst the dam and led to his first international show. Today Pham Luan’s work has been seen in shows around the world in places like Chicago, New York, LA, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore and many other cities. Originally Pham worked with oil and gouache but gave up gouache after his first show as the difficulty of the combination made it simply untenable for him to continue. Today oil is his medium of choice for his pieces which often feature flowers, city scenes and a variety of trees.
