René Monzón Relova “Pozas”
Light Shadows, Highly Detailed Lush Landscape, Deserted Road, Dappled Sunlight

2021

About the Item

Taking inspiration from his surroundings in Spain, Pozas gives us this lush landscape entitled "Light Shadows". The scene, with dappled sunlight streaming though the meticulously painted foliage and its dusty road leading into the unknow leave the viewer wanting to know more. The abandoned bicycle laying in the tall grass is a mystery waiting to be discovered. "Pozas" René Monzón Relova Light Shadows oil on canvas 27.50h x 29w in 69.85h x 73.66w cm FRAMED DIMENSIONS 28.50h x 39.50w in 72.39h x 100.33w cm PZS047 René Monzón Relova, “Pozas” b. 1966, Havana, Cuba Cuban born “Pozas” is a self-educated artist. After completing his studies in Electrical Engineering, he abandoned his career to dedicate himself entirely to painting. His first exhibitions in Cuba were done in impressionistic style but He later turned to hyperrealism/surrealism with landscape and nature as the focus—at which time his work is classified with the “Contemporary Cuban Painters” group. He exhibited in numerous exhibitions in Cuba where appreciation for his painting achieved international recognition. His work is included in collections in Italy, Spain, Venezuela, Mexico and the United States. In 1995, Pozas traveled to Madrid in Spain and decided to make it his home. The person shown in the pictures is my wife. In them, I reflect on her desire to be alone with nature. Time is not important, only the place that choose to feel the peace she needs. Nature overflows in my work. To copy a landscape does not help me, for I am not satisfied with just that. I believe in the imagined, modeled landscape. Because nature is as interesting to discover as it is to imagine, there is always a place you thought of. Each landscape is a dialogue of the person with the trees, the rivers, roads, hills, and seas. The shapes and the curves that draw the horizon, or the limit where they begin or end, and the forests, are eager to get out of the pictures. Wind turbines are one of the things created by man that always attract my attention. I do not fight against them in my paintings, only I try to mimic their appearance and turn them into a kind more.

  • Collinwood School Fire, Collinwood, Ohio, 1908. Oil on Canvas, Framed
    By Eric Edward Esper
    Located in Chicago, IL
“Ash Wednesday of Ashes” March 4, 1908 At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 1908, a fire started in the basement near the furnace, under the front stairwell of the school, which blocked the front door. Panicked children were trapped by a crush of bodies in the doorway of the exit of the rear stairwell, trapping the rest of the students and teachers in the upper floors. The community rushed to the school for rescue efforts only to find an impenetrable wall of bodies at the doors. Unable to help, rescuers could do nothing for nearly four hours but watch in horror as some children jumped from the windows to escape, while others remained trapped in the inferno. Firefighters eventually arrived from 10 miles away in nearby Cleveland, but they were too late. 175 perished including two teachers and one rescue worker. Eric Edward Esper Collinwood School Fire, Ohio 1908 oil on canvas 22h x 28w in (29.5h x 34w in, framed) 55.88h x 71.12w cm EEE010 Eric Edward Esper After obtaining my BFA in Illustration from Northern Michigan University in 1996 I relocated to Chicago to pursue my artistic endeavors. Here, I began exclusively oil painting and have assembled a body of paintings chronicling scenes of Chicago done primarily in plein air. Capturing parts of the city’s landscape during its cultural evolution had been my way of conveying history as a painter. My fascination with landscapes and history has led me to create oil paintings of scenes that have affected us in dramatic ways. Recently I have begun painting aerial views of locations that have interesting historical significance, encapsulating true stories that are hard to imagine and harder to forget. My latest paintings capture these places and depict them with historically accurate attention to detail. Using various sources I recreate these scenes with as many photographs of every angle of the incident and research the stories, submersing myself in the event. My newest body of paintings depicts events with a more historically tragic significance, depicting scenes of the darkest hours in America’s Midwest history, where the landscape became the backdrop for tragedy and calamity. These events that irrevocably altered so many lives are important to remember, not only for the people lost and how it affected our culture, but also to remind us that disaster can occur at any time, anywhere.
