William Rickarby Miller
Morrisinia, New York in the Bronx

About the Item

Signed lower left, titled and dated Born in Staindrop, County Durham, England, he was a portrait and landscape painter, especially appreciated for watercolor painting, which he sold through the American Art Union. Although he painted in the same locations as the Hudson River School painters, he is not considered a part of that group that strove for dramatic effect because his work is more intimate and story-telling in intent. He became an accomplished painter as a young man, taking his first art training from his father, Joseph, an animal and landscape painter. Miller practiced by sketching the townspeople. One of these portraits attracted the attention of an unknown patron who sent Miller to London to further his studies. By 1845 he had emigrated to the United States, accompanied by a sister and two brothers. They first settled in Buffalo and within three years had permanently settled in New York City. After some difficulty launching a career, he received several commissions for watercolors through the American Art-Union. With a keen eye for detail, he frequently painted the upstate New York landscape, which he preferred, although he made his living through portraiture and illustration. His first documented American landscape is "Mountain Landscape, Buffalo," 1845. He began to exhibit at the National Academy of Design between 1844 and 1845. As his career began to pick up around 1853, he completed his first book illustration assignment for G. P. Putnam and Company's, "Homes of American Authors." Such illustrated weeklies as Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper also began to carry his illustrations. From 1851 to 1862 Miller worked out of his home at 1 Perry Street and from 1868 to 1877 he lived in his studio in the Dodworth Building at 806 Broadway. Magazine assignments began to decline toward the latter part of the 1860s and Miller considered dropping his career and joining the M. Knoedler Company (once Goupil). However, his career as an artist was saved through the patronage of Henry W. Gear, an artists' supplier, George M. Wing, an agent, and John L. Chambers, a secretary. Around 1873 he spent years organizing a book on American landscapes that he titled "A Thousand Gems," but it was never published. However the drawings provided much of the material for is later work in oil. He was a disciplined worker and prolific painter who produced hundreds of watercolors, oils, and pen and ink sketches. The end of his life was tragic, because after separating from his wife and children in 1867, he led a somewhat secluded life, devoting his time to traveling and to sketching rural scenes. It is believed that he died on one such excursion during July 1893. His work can be found in the collection of the New York Historical Society. Credit: askart.

    By Hermann Ottomar Herzog

Signed & dated, lower left, 1869 Herman Ottomar Herzog was born in Bremen, Germany, on November 15, 1831. He studied art at the Dusseldorf Academy, starting in 1848, under several classical landscape painters. In 1855, Herzog made his first visit to Norway. The trip was a milestone in Herzog's career as it exposed him to the rugged landscape of the Norwegian wilderness and instilled in him a lifelong sense of nature that was to show in all his work. During the late 1850's and early 1860's, Herzog's fame spread throughout Europe. His paintings were collected for their dynamic realism and strong atmospheric effects. Among his patrons were several of Europe's royal families, including Queen Victoria of England and Grand Duke Alexander of Russia. He exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1863 and 1864, winning an Honorable Mention. While in Paris, it is thought that Herzog came into contact with the popular Barbizon School, whose adherents painted the grandeur and beauty of Nature in a romantic and realistic style. The effect of the Barbizon painters can also be seen in Herzog's poetic handling of mood and color. Although he was still in Europe, Herzog sent several paintings for exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy from 1863 to 1869. He had several friends in the United States and they were developing a rather good demand for his work. It is not known exactly when Herzog decided to come to America. Sometime in the late 1860's he settled in Philadelphia. Besides wanting a developing market for his work, Herzog left Bremen due to rising political agitation by Prussia, which had just absorbed Bremen into its domain. In America, Herzog continued to paint his romantic landscapes, finding the American wilderness well suited to his style. In 1871, he traveled up the Hudson River on a painting tour. In 1873, he took his first trip west, going to Yosemite, then to Wyoming, Oregon, and along the West Coast to the Coronado Island, near the Mexican border. Herzog made several journeys west, finding each trip more fruitful than the last. He became known for his depictions of Yosemite, receiving great acclaim for a fine El Capitan, much in the style of his fellow countryman and painter Albert Bierstadt. His last trip west was in 1905, at the age of 74. In 1876, Herzog participated in the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, showing a Norwegian scene and a Yosemite landscape...

Régis Francois Gignoux was a distinguished nineteenth-century artist whose work illuminated the sublime aspects of the American landscape. He was born in Lyon, France and trained at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where his instructor, the history painter Paul-Hipployte Delaroche, encouraged his interest in landscape painting. He traveled to the United States in 1840, and immediately showed interest in American Landscapes. He immediately settled in New York and painted many well known sites of the United States: Niagara Falls, the Catskill Mountains, Mount Washington, and Mammoth Cave, Kentucky. He is most famous for his winter scenes, but shows beautiful landscapes year round. Gignoux quickly established himself within the leading Hudson River School circles of the time. He took sketching trips with Frederic Church and John Frederick Kensett. Today, his paintings are in the collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the New York Historical Society, and the Georgia Museum of Art.
