Wilson Irvine
Master American Impressionist Landscape Painter Wilson Irvine "In the Forrest"

About the Item

Wilson Henry Irvine, born on February 28, 1869, and passing away in 1936, was a distinguished American Impressionist painter renowned for his captivating landscapes. Initially, Irvine's artistic journey began near Chicago, where he honed his skills at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Despite this early association, his artistic prowess transcended geographical boundaries as he ventured across Western Europe, adeptly capturing the essence of its countryside through an American Impressionist lens. Hailing from a lineage of Illinois settlers, Irvine's artistic flair emerged early on. After graduating from Rockford Central High School, he delved into the realm of artistry at the Chicago Portrait Company before pursuing formal education at The Art Institute of Chicago. During his formative years, Irvine's fascination with both subject matter and artistic technique burgeoned. Notably, he became a pioneer of the airbrush medium, a novel artistic tool at the time. His proficiency with the airbrush paved the way for his endeavors as an illustrator and graphic designer in Chicago. Simultaneously, Irvine nurtured his passion for painting, ascending through Chicago's art circles. He furthered his artistic education at the renowned Art Institute of Chicago, where he immersed himself in night school for over seven years. The Institute became a steadfast supporter of Irvine's work, showcasing his pieces and even granting him a prestigious solo exhibition during the 1916-1917 holiday season. In the pursuit of artistic inspiration, Irvine frequently journeyed to the East Coast, particularly Massachusetts and Connecticut, exhibiting his affinity for New England scenery. However, it wasn't until 1914, at the age of 45, that Irvine permanently relocated to Old Lyme, Connecticut, a pivotal moment that cemented his legacy within the Florence Griswold circle and the broader American Impressionist movement. Throughout his career, Irvine remained committed to experimentation, exploring new artistic techniques such as "aqua prints" and "prismatic painting." His artistic evolution earned him accolades, including election into the National Academy of Design as an Associate Academician in 1926. Despite his profound impact on American Impressionism, Irvine's oeuvre extended beyond the confines of his homeland. His European sojourns in 1908, 1923, and 1928-29 yielded remarkable examples of American Impressionist landscapes infused with a unique perspective inspired by the French Impressionist masters. Tragically, Irvine's illustrious career was cut short by a cerebral hemorrhage in 1936. However, his artistic legacy endures, with his works adorning prestigious institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago and the Florence Griswold Museum. Irvine's mastery of light and texture continues to captivate audiences, reaffirming his status as a luminary of early 20th-century American Impressionism.
