This is a wonderful example of Gsell's impressionist work. With rich deep Mediterranean colours and bold broad brushstrokes it shows an artist full of confidence and understanding of his genre.
Gsell was born on the 19th November 1860 in Paris where he died in 1944.
He was not an artist who was tied down to any specific medium or subject and as a consequence his art work is very varied covering all genres from traditional oils to illustrations and beyond. In time he has been remembered for his portrayal of portraits, landscapes, genre and Arab scenes.
Originally from Switzerland, he studied under his father Caspar Gsell, and then Cabanel at the School of Arts in Paris.
Gsell exhibited in Paris from 1882 until 1908 at the Salon of French Artists and was made a member of in 1893. From 1909 until 1920 he exhibited at the Dalon de la Nationale des Beaux-Arts. In the Paris l’Exposition Universelle of 1889 he received a mention for his work.

During the course of the First World War he worked with amongst others, Augustus John, William Orpen & Frank Brangwyn, who greatly influenced him.
