Gianni Vagnetti
Gianni Vagnetti Lady in Red Portrait Painting 20 century oil panel,

1940 ca

About the Item

The painting is a portrait of an unknown lady, here depicted with a with an absorbed look. The intense red lipstick, matching with the the dress-allusion to fire and passion-creates a strong contradiction with the the sober and plain style, and the thoughtful expression. The painting, even if not signed, received the authentication of the wife of Vagnetti, Gioia, as reported in the back of the canvas. Vagnetti approached art under the guidance of his father by attending the free school of Nude at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He devoted himself entirely to painting after obtaining the Stibbert Prize on 1920. On 1922 he exhibited at the Fiorentina Primaverile; on 1924 he was present for the first time at the Venice Biennale. From then until his death he continued assiduously to take part at the main Italian and foreign exhibitions including the Rome Quadrennial and the Italian Twentieth Century Exhibitions. On the 1927 he founded, with other artists, the Tuscan twentieth-century group (later Tuscan group of the twentieth century). Two years later he was appointed substitute teacher of “Sketching figures” and “Pictorial anatomy” at the Royal Institute of Art of Porta Romana in Florence. On the 1930 he was in Paris for the first time, where he returned often also in the 40s. On the 1932 he held his first personal exhibition at the Venice Biennale; on the 1934, with the project for the scenes for Bellini's “Sonnambula”, he started a successful career as a set designer, in particular for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, that accompanied him in parallel to his painting career for all of his life. On the 1941 he was become an academic of San Luca, decorated with the Legion of Honor and took part of numerous commissions and artistic juries and won important painting awards. He was also a writer and journalist: on the 1944 the publisher Carlo Cya of Florence published his volume on Impressionist painters. His works are preserved in numerous Italian and foreign museums (Florence, Forlì, Rome, Milan, Turin, Genoa, Trieste, Paris, Baltimore) and in private collections.

Oil on canvas, 62 x 51 cm (without the frame) Even if on the background there is an attribution to “Francesco Gessi pupil of Guido Reni” by the bolognese art historian Guido Zucchini (dated 1945), recent studies are tending to add it to the corpus of Girolamo Negri called Il Boccia (Bologna 1648-1718) due to lots of similarities with his style (the pale and warm palette chosen, the profile) The painting represents a lady on profile wearing a brown turban, a yellow clock...
