About the Item
This lovely British Art Deco portrait oil painting is by noted artist James Robert Granville Exley and provenance is by family descent. The sitter is Elizabeth Exley, possibly his wife. Painted circa 1935 it is a half length portrait of Elizabeth in a red dress, pearls and a fur wrap. She is slightly smiling at the artist/viewer. There is lovely detail in her face and her glossy hair and pearls gleam. The palette and brush work are superb. This is a fine 1930's portrait and an excellent example of Exley's work.
Provenance. Family descent.
Condition. Oil on canvas. Image 24 inches by 20 inches. Good condition.
Frame. Housed in a beautiful Le Brun Boulet frame, 34 inches by 30 inches framed. Excellent condition.
James Robert Granville Exley (1878-1967) was a painter, printmaker and teacher, born in Great Horton, Bradford, Yorkshire on 16th May 1878. He studied at Skipton Science & Art Schools and at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1907. He then went to work in Paris for a time. He was headmaster of Hull Municipal Art School, 1912-1919 and also taught in Cambridge, moving to London in the 1920s. Exley exhibited widely from 1906 and became a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1923. Exley was elected ARE in 1905 and RE (Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers) in 1923, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, Redfern Gallery and Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He subsequently lived in Grassington, Yorkshire.

James Robert Granville Exley
James Robert Granville Exley was a painter, printmaker and teacher, born in Great Horton, Bradford, West Yorkshire on 16th May 1878. He studied at Craven College and the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1907. He then went to work in Paris for a time. He was headmaster of Hull School of Art and Design, 1912–19 and also taught in Cambridge, moving to London in the 1920s. Exley exhibited widely from 1906 and became a member of the Royal Society of Painter- Prin in 1923. Exley was elected ARE in 1905 and RE (Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers) in 1923, exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Arts and Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.
