About the Item

This lovely Old Master portrait oil painting is attributed to the circle of Michael Dahl. Painted circa 1710 the sitter is Rachel Missing, wife of Roger Hogg of Newliston, near Edinburgh. It is a superb half length portrait, painted as an oval, of Rachel in a sumptuous blue satin dress with a gold shawl. A really lovely Old Master portrait oil painting. Inscribed verso. Provenance. Hay and Lyall Fine Art Dealers, Aberdeen - stamp verso. Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 25 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a fine gilded Lely panelled period carved frame, 37 inches by 32 inches and in good condition. Michael Dahl (1659–1743) was a Swedish portrait painter who lived and worked in England most of his career and died there. He was one of the most internationally known Swedish painters of his time. He painted portraits of many aristocrats and some members of royal families, such as Queen Anne of Great Britain, Prince George of Denmark and the exiled Queen Christina of Sweden.
