Raymond Debieve
The Chess Match

1973

About the Item

'The Chess Match', oil on cardstock paper, by Raymond Debiève (1973). Rich colours, bold, painterly brush strokes and an unusual subject for a work of art, Debiève has created this scene in his post-cubist style. Picasso's influence is undeniable yet Debiève's own naive artistic style is on display as well. In good overall condition. Newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. Signed by the artist in upper left hand and dated 10th of May 1973 in the lower right. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. A short video clip of this work may be provided upon request. "Chess is a beautiful game. Like artists painting their worlds within the confines of a canvas, so do chess players build their vision within the square-format of their board. Any art lover will be awed to notice how grandmasters — the best players of chess in the world — will follow similar principles of composition in their strategy that artists use in their art. There’s symmetry, rhythm, an understanding of line and negative space. And just like in all compositions, no element is truly independent, but connected to the whole. The best-placed pieces will attack, threaten, defend and block the opponent’s movement, all at the same time" (Artshaft).
