Yvonne Guégan
Portrait of a Man

circa 1970s

About the Item

'Portrait of a Man', oil on canvas, by Yvonne Guégan (circa 1970s). This is not a portrait of the reclusive billionaire, Howard Hughes. Regrettably, we don't know who it is but he looks like a fascinating character. The very wide collars from the 1970s frames the pensive look. Given the artist's biography, it wouldn't be a leap to say he was from Normandy in the North of France. Behind the subject light filters in from the window. The technique is raw with some edges of the canvas left unfinished. With modern art, process has been elevated over the finished product. It may be the case here - in fact, it adds interest overall to the work and particularly as it sits in this tray frame. The painting is in fair-to-good condition having recently undergone a thorough cleaning by an art restoration professional. It is newly framed in a tray and signed in the lower right hand. As the first work being sold by this gallery, we are delighted in having discovered this artist and will be on the lookout for many more. Please enjoy the photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video may be provided. About the Artist: Yvonne Guégan (1915-2005). Passionate and gifted artist, Yvonne Guégan often travelled from her native Normandy both for purposes of research and for the simple pleasure of travel. Whatever the reason, after each enlightening experience she returned without fail to her home region. She even participated in the rebuilding of Caen, a city devastated by WWII, contributing for her part in some of the most ambitious and monumental post-war projects. Simultaneously painter, ceramist, sculptor… Yvonne Guégan stands out with respect to her exceptional contribution to Normandy’s artistic heritage. Vivid and bright colours from her paintings and watercolours were coupled with a sense of humour imbued into her ceramics and drawings. The rhythm and strength of her prodigious artworks reveal the vision of a talented artist, resolutely modern in both her style and freedom of expression. Freedom is what undeniably defines this woman with an amazing creative vigour: freedom in her painting, freedom from exploitation by art galleries, freedom from being pigeonholed into particular art movements, freedom in her life… Her extraordinary strength of character and deeply rooted convictions undeniably marked a whole generation of artists and a whole region. Even if she often experienced disapproval and misunderstanding from her contemporaries, she had no regrets, for Yvonne's art was “a gesture of love, an act of generosity or rebellion”. This state of mind guided her during her entire life (Ref: Galerie Danielle Bourdette). Dimensions with Frame: H 57 cm / 22.4" W 48 cm / 18.9" Dimensions without Frame: H 55 cm / 21.7 W 46 cm / 18.1"

'Portrait of Man in Cap', oil on canvas, French School (circa 1960s-70s). This artwork was discovered in the South of France. A splendid portrait it is and is most likely from one of the countries in French-speaking Africa. Most of those countries that speak French are in Western and Central Africa, with others scattered across the continent. Having arrived in Africa from colonial activity, French took on many different forms and maintained use to some degree in nearly two dozen nations. In addition to the continent of Africa, there are many other French speakers...

Born in Epping, England in 1893, she lived and worked predominantly in London where she became a prominent member of several British arts clubs and societies. She first learned to paint in the Impressionist style of her father, but after a brief period of formal study with Walter Sickert in 1913 she renounced formal art schooling. Throughout her career, Orovida always remained outside of any mainstream British art movements. Much to Lucien's disappointment she soon turned away from naturalistic painting and developed her own unusual style combining elements of Japanese, Chinese, Persian and Indian art. Her rejection of Impressionism, which for the Pissarro family had become a way of life, together with the simultaneous decision to drop her famous last name and simply use Orovida as a ‘nom de peintre’, reflected a deep desire for independence and distance from the weight of the family legacy. Orovida's most distinctive and notable works were produced from the period of 1919 to 1939 using her own homemade egg tempera applied in thin, delicate washes to silk, linen or paper and sometimes embellished with brocade borders. These elegant and richly decorative works generally depict Eastern, Asian and African subjects...

Provenance: from the artists estate, France Maria Tort Xirau ( Figueres , 26 May 1924 – 6 June 2018) was a painter and photographic and cinematographic editor from Emporda. She developed a long professional career in leading photographic studios, in films for The Walt Disney Company and also in advertising claims for companies such as Educa Borràs . The second half of her life was dedicated to painting, exercising a luminous, varied and nostalgic chromatic style in the techniques of oil and watercolor and with exhibitions of her work in Barcelona and Figueres. A mixture of nostalgia and tenderness is evident.". Two years later, she did it at Sala Conex in Barcelona and in 2007 and 2013 the Consortium of Sant Ferran Castle and the Figueres Town Council organized tribute exhibitions. In 2013, she ceded to the council of the city of Figueres her work Mercat de la plaça de l'Ajuntament , watercolored on paper around 1991, which is exhibited in the rest room of the building.
