No. 209, painting by Paris-based Chinese contemporary artist ZHANG Hongyu from the “Portrait” series. India ink, acrylic, charcoal and pastel on canvas, 140 x 100 cm. Artwork sold unframed. Zhang’s painting takes root in calligraphy and Chinese traditional art. Each stroke of paint composing his portraits has its own existence and takes part in the expressive power of his striking “human landscapes”. The characters of his portraits don’t exist: “each portrait is me”, says the artist.
