“True Believers” by Sandra Cohen is a 24 x 24 x 1 inch contemporary abstract landscape with overlaid figurative elements. A misty, humid landscape, loosely painted in blue, green, white and yellow suggests a road or path leading into some distance. Floating in the air at the top of the painting are three sets of hands clasped in postures of prayer, and at the bottom, three corresponding groups of hands form shapes of guns. This acrylic painting is unframed, with bright blue painted sides, and the signature on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
