André Lemaître
Still Life with Crab

1951

About the Item

'Still Life with Crab', oil on board, by André Lemaître (1951). As an artist based in Northern France's Normandy, Lemaître painted many works in the countryside, still lifes such as this one, as well as portraits. In Normandy, overlooking the Mont St. Michel bay, is a popular resort for Parisians and English alike. Famously, Christian Dior lived here as a child. It is France's premier port for shellfish, particularly crabs, clams and scallops. With such an abundance of seafood it is no wonder Lemaître chose these shellfish as a subject for his painting. The alluring red of the crab's outer shell contrasts with its lighter coloured underside and the light blue of the plate in this softened impressionist representation. The work is in good overall condition having been newly framed with a French-style linen slip. It is signed and dated by the artist in the lower left hand. Please enjoy the many images accompanying this listing. Upon request a video may be provided. About the Artist: André Lemaître (1909-1995). Lemaître did not stop drawing since childhood and began to paint seriously around 1926. After studying at the Caen Normal School, he became a schoolmaster in Billy (Calvados area) in 1932 yet continued to paint. This Norman artist created most of his artwork in Calvados. From 1960, he devoted himself exclusively to his work and settled in Cesny-aux-Vignes where he set up a workshop. He received the Gold Medal of French Artists in Paris in 1972. He is said to have been a prolific artist known for having painted the Norman countryside, still lifes, portraits and other large compositions. Starting from a fairly traditional impressionism, he succumbed to the influence of Cézanne having, in 1936, attended a major retrospective in Paris, then of Vlaminck after 1945, before forging a personal style that some may qualify as 'Abstract Realism'. 'Portrait of a Reposing Cat', oil on board, by F. DuParc (circa 1960s). A thoroughly modern depiction of a colourful, contented feline most likely inspired by Italian Futurist, Fortunato Depero (1892-1960). Futurism corresponded to Cubism sharing several elements including faceted or segmented shapes. Cubism however, was generally static and more subdued whereas Futurism was bright and dynamic embracing technology, mechanisation, power and energy. In this work, the vibrant colours and serene look on the subject transmit a sense of optimism - life is good...

  • Still Life with Fruit
    By Juliane Solignac
    Located in London, GB
'Still Life with Fruit', oil on board (1968), by Juliane Solignac. An engaging yet unusual artwork with vibrant colours, thickly applied with a painting knife. Nonetheless, through the thick paint there is an unfinished quality to the work leaving the impression that the raw canvas - or board in this case - is revealed. Some of the colour seems to have been scored on to the work with an artist's knife leaving lines and creating angles as in a cubist painting. There are layers of paint with no evident brush strokes. One may believe in this instance, Madame Solignac used this technique to create a visual effect which would deliberately have upset traditionalists. Be reminded that the Impressionists were criticised for creating patchy, incomplete works because there were strong notions about the correct way to paint in those days. Picasso once said, 'To finish a work is to kill it.' It is unsure how Mme Solignac would have felt about that. Regardless of this conjecture, the painting is colourful, compelling and rewards the viewer with a curious interest. The work is in fair vintage condition, newly framed with a linen slip. It is signed: 'Julian Solignac 68'. About the Artist: Juliane Solignac (born 1904). Regrettably, there is not much information available about the artist (including what year she may have died). She is referenced as a resident artist in Montmartre in the 1930s, one of only a handful of women in an otherwise sea of male names. In addition, Solignac is mentioned in both French and Dutch references as a creator of fabrics. These may have been more artistic 'tapis' which are hung on the wall like a painting. A Dutch museum references having one of her designs in their collection. Here is a quote from the magazine, 'COTE', Edition Nº 9 (March 2009): "Until 20 April, Pierre Frey is exhibiting 50 printed fabric works from their own collection dating from 1936 to today. Most were produced in liaison with artists like Jean Chatanay, Irène Rohr, Juliane Solignac, Rieffel Anossof, Janine Janet...

  • "Faun and Fawn" Aaron Bohrod, Realist Still Life, Deer and Putti
    By Aaron Bohrod
    Located in New York, NY
Aaron Bohrod Faun and Fawn, 1984 Signed lower right Oil on gesso board 16 x 12 inches Aaron Bohrod's work has not been limited to one style or medium. Initially recognized as a regionalist painter of American scenes, particularly of his native Chicago, Bohrod later devoted himself to detailed still-life paintings rendered in the trompe l'oeil style. He also worked for several years in ceramics and wrote a book on pottery. Born in 1907, Bohrod began his studies at Chicago's Crane Junior College in 1925, and two years later enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago. But it was at the Art Students League in New York City, from 1930 to 1932, that he studied under the man believed to be his most significant early influence, John Sloan. Sloan's romantic realism is reflected in the many depictions of Chicago life, which comprised most of Bohrod's early work. Under Sloan's tutelage, Bohrod came to subscribe to the belief that painters should find the subjects of their art in the immediate world around them. These paintings emphasized architecture unique to north Chicago and featured Chicagoans engaged in such everyday activities as working, playing or going to the theatre. The romantic aspect was conveyed by the use of misty colors, and the realism by attention to detail. In 1936, Bohrod won the Guggenheim Fellowship award in creative painting...
