Guigen Zha
The Escaping, Oil Painting

2022

About the Item

Artist Comments
Artist Guigen Zha paints a realistic image of lotuses with a subtle spatial illusion. He shows the beauty of the flower's mysterious character, emerging from the mud unstained. "Reality is black. Tomorrow should be green," says Guigen. "If I don't want to be a part of the black, what I should do today is escape." He draws influence from the Chinese philosopher Zhou Dunyi in this culturally symbolic composition.

About the Artist
From cross-cultural life experiences, artist Guigen Zha presents conceptual compositions of traditional Chinese art imposed on contemporary elements. He seeks a balance of the harmonic and contradictory in each artwork—a synthesis of different artistic traditions. Guigen's creative passion led him to a fruitful career as an art teacher, animation artist, and graphic designer in Shenzhen and Shanghai. He migrated to the United States and finished his BFA at Missouri State University and his MFA at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Guigen bridges surrealism and postmodern art with still-life objects and their spatial relationships in the digital age. His recurring theme of eastern cultural relics brings honor to his deep connection to his heritage. "My work is a strong emotional expression of candor, belief, and hope," says Guigen. Working from his home studio, Guigen enjoys being in a state of tranquility where he can quietly contemplate. Aside from painting, he spends time writing poetry and bonding with his family—his pillar and strength. Guigen continues to work part-time as a graphic designer and art teacher.

  • "Present Perfect" contemporary oil painting of a wrapped gift, pretty in pink
    By Maryann Lucas
    Located in Sag Harbor, NY
A painting of a perfectly wrapped white package against a magenta background. Centered in the composition sits a white polka dot wrapped box, sitting with the edge directly down the middle of the canvas, and topped with a shiny magenta ribbon. The white of the present reflects a bit on the ground, as if the ground is slightly shiny. Painting dimensions: 12 x 12 inches Frame dimensions: 13 x 13 inches Framed in a white floating frame Artist Bio Maryann Lucas lives and works in Sag Harbor. She is primarily self-taught but has also received instruction and support from wonderful and generous members of the East End artistic community. Working exclusively in oils, Lucas sets out almost daily to create plein aire landscapes and seascapes. In her studio, she works directly from life and captures the beauty of natural light as it transforms ordinary objects into visual delights. Lucas wants her work to celebrate all that is well with this world and brilliant in this life, despite its pockets of darkness. For me, she says, I know I am in the Presence of something beautiful, when it steals my breath, silences my mind, pushes out everything else and draws me in. I trust That. I use That to guide my hands as I arrange a still life or scan a landscape to determine where to set down my easel. Ultimately, That is what drives me to paint. Becoming evermore skilled as an oil painter is another of Lucas goals. To that end she remains teachable, finding it refreshing and vital for her own growth to paint with others. She has studied with favorite artists including Michael Klein...
