Malia Pettit
The Queen, I, Oil Painting

2024

About the Item

Artist Comments
A shiny chess piece reflects artist Malia Pettit's love for portraying powerful women and captivating still-life subjects. With the ability to move in any direction and cover as much ground as she desires, the queen stands out as the most powerful figure on the board. The monochromatic palette adds a sense of elegance and simplicity to the piece.

About the Artist
Malia Pettit sees her artistic process as an act of “liberating the paint” and “allowing for the unexpected to occur.” Her portraits of women stem from a fascination with glossy magazines and their portrayal of models, actors and celebrities. Her work has been especially influenced by Chantal Joffe and John Singer Sargent. She currently resides in Louisiana after having lived in both California and England for several years. When she’s not painting, she is a full-time mom and enjoys exploring estate sales, antique stores and used bookstores.

    By Jose H. Alvarenga
    Located in San Francisco, CA

    Artist Comments
"For this piece, I thought it would be so much fun to articulate a painting within a painting," says artist Jose H. Alvarenga." "The image on display is of a lime in the process of being finished with the real subject next to it."

    About the Artist
Jose’s soft still life paintings are like visual puns. He creates relationships between objects that evoke both amusement and contemplation in the viewer. By devising a clever dialogue between objects, Jose turns a still life into a story. Jose utilizes a classical realist style with a gentle nod to surrealism through his unique subject selections. He is inspired by everyday objects, particularly those with a quality of nostalgia, memory, or humor. Jose paints out of his Los Angeles area apartment, where he also enjoys playing the keyboard and reading art books.

Vintage piano-shaped music box, pen and handwritten note painted in a classical trompe l'oeil style. "I love the sound of music boxes, it's incredible how all those tiny holes can replicate a melody," says Jose. "On the note I wrote "Gymnopedie #1 by Erik Satie" - one of my favorites classical pieces."
