Mitchell Funk
Staten Island Ferry in Magenta New York Harbor by Mitchell Funk, Color Field

1971

About the Item

New York Photographer Mithcell Funk creates an image with a broad expanse of mostly flat magenta. His representation of space is flat and simplified. In the center of the picture plane is an old silhouetted Staten Island Ferry going one way and just behind it is an old silhouetted cruise ship going the other way. The trailblazing image was shot in 1971. It pushes the boundaries of color photography making it a historically important color photograph. Funk's color does not follow nature. He uses color as an expression of emotion and beauty. The image is a push towards abstraction but still rooted in representation. It was taken 51 years ago and still seems very contemporary. Signed dated and numbered 4/15 lower right recto, printed later, other sizes available, unframed, printed later. This work is printed on fine art Hahnemuhle paper. Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of " Color Photography" In 1970 he participated in one the first " Color Photography" shows at a major museum. Brooklyn Museum, show "Images en Couleur" . 1971 Included he was included in the visionary book "Frontiers of Photography" Time-Life. Color ! American Photography Transformed. Amon Carter Museum.
