Anna Rotty
Electrical Marking

2022

About the Item

Anna Rotty is an artist who’s interested in making you move. In her photographs and small sculptures, Rotty plays with perception through the use of appropriated and transparent materials and surprising use of found objects that pop up where you least expect them. In Electrical Marking, the artist turns her attention to the ground, calling out a stark, saturated mark that serves as the harbinger for further human intervention and imposition. By showing us an image of the ground that we take for granted, Anna Rotty manages to force a shift in our own spatial awareness as we’re suddenly reminded that this sort of looking is out of the ordinary. When’s the last time that you stopped to examine the mark-making that is inherent in building a city? To further expound, if a city is built on marks, is the whole thing just a work of art anyway?
