About the Item

Erica Kelly Martin is an artist and photographer, based in Los Angeles, whose work centers on recurring themes of identity, transformation, and the paradox of human existence, condensed in a moment. She photographs people, often in their natural surroundings, depicting their rituals and the manifestations of their interior lives, as well as landscapes that show the mark of their inhabitants. She is interested in themes of growing up, of putting on masks, or casting them aside, who people are, or who they would like to be. She creates intimate portraits, often in prosaic places. Martin studied at Amherst College and Hampshire College, the International Center of Photography in New York, the University of Chicago, and the Los Angeles Center of Photography. In addition to her photography work, Erica is a metalsmith, creating collectible pieces, well as an attorney, working to protect the environment. She travels for assignment around the world, and lives and works in Los Angeles with her partner, children, and various rescue animals. Martin’s work has been shown in galleries and shows across the United States, as well as in Paris and Milan.

This image is printed in an edition of 7, but comes in larger and smaller sizes. Each photograph is hand printed on Canson Baryta Paper and is signed and editioned by the artist. The image has been shown in galleries in Paris and Los Angeles and several copies are owned by collectors worldwide. Statement This image of Crossing Paris is from Sarah Hadley's series Story Lines, which explores the female interior landscape. The series was inspired by the French New Wave films of the 60’s, which were shot in black and white on the street and which often portrayed the subconscious thoughts and feelings of ordinary women. These photo collages pay homage to the surrealists who first employed the technique of conjoining unrelated images to create startling and thought-provoking connections. Using backdrops...
