About the Item
Limited Edition Color Photograph - Climate Change " Loss " 2021
In my series Fading Blue Marble, I address the most chilling threat to humanity beyond the present pandemic, our changing climate. My images explore a disturbing vision of the near future when immense heat becomes a major threat. I was motivated to create these images as a result of my gaining a deeper understanding of the science and human impact of climate change. We hear from scientists that a 2 degree rise in temperature is a tipping point to disaster. At this tipping point, the ice caps melt, 1.8 trillion tons of carbon are released into the atmosphere including the greenhouse gas methane. Methane is 34 times as powerful as carbon as an earth warming blanket. These photographs are a visual depiction of post tipping point; an irreversible 3 to 6 degree temperature increase in a world of flood, drought, wildfire and scarcity of resources. Ironically, these scenarios can be visually interesting and simultaneously horrific.
The title of this portfolio is a reference to ‘The Blue Marble’ which is the name given by NASA to the photo of the entire earth taken from space in 1972 and since adopted as a symbol for the environmental movement. In my images, our “marble” or earth is fading but not yet darkened as there is still a short time left to apply urgent corrections. This series is created to show potential scenarios if we go beyond the tipping point with the hope that these imagined visions of future living don’t become a reality.
About:
Lewis’ artistic practice often explores science, engineering, technology, and innovation. Howard Lewis
Lewis started photographing when he was a teenager and continued through film school. He went on to work as an advertising and editorial photographer where he photographed for international clients like Taylor Wines and General Foods. Lewis’ fine art photographs have been in several museum exhibitions including the Michener and Dow museums as well as in major corporate collections. Even while he did commercial assignments, Lewis always photographed for himself as an expression of a specific vision. He mostly photographed in black and white, and studied with O Winston Link, Joyce Tenneson and many others. Lewis developed an interest in creating images related to science and innovation. He was fortunate to meet prolific inventor and scientist Dr. Edwin Land (CEO and Founder of Polaroid) which furthered his passion for integrating science into his photographs. Polaroid materials became part of his way of sketching photographically. Eventually, he left the commercial business and photographed extensively for self-expression. He ventured into parallel initiatives such as new product development (he holds three patents) and creating welded metal sculpture. All these activities influenced his photographs, especially sculpting which became immensely important to his growth in creating his still life images. Lewis’ photographs have been exhibited in galleries and cultural centers internationally, including the Gladstone Regional Museum and Gallery in Queensland, Australia, Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa; the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania; the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science in Midland, Michigan; the New York Center for Photographic Arts; the Black Box Gallery in Portland, Oregon; the Courtyard Gallery in Connecticut; and the Grey & Gove Gallery in New York City.
