About the Item

This photograph is of an edition of 10. Paper size is 17 by 44 inches, this listing is for an unframed print. Additional sizes are available. Atlanta-based photographer and master printer John Dean’s recent series of photographic still lifes were created during the height of The Pandemic. During the Covid 19 lockdown, John escaped isolation by hiking and camping in the Southeastern mountains among dense forests and mesmerizing sounds of free flowing streams. Making one work per week for a year, this series relates to and was inspired by John’s experiences in the wilderness. All of the panoramas are made from folded temporary sculptures of leftover strips of printmaking paper, recycled into something illusionary and transitory. They were lit from above and underneath, and were influenced by the forces he felt in nature that are not directly visible to the human eye. The hidden flows of energy, or neural networks of continuous communication are suggested by the wave movements formed by the interweaving paper layers and how they are lit in the studio. They are not created by graphic software algorithms, but are rather a kind of handmade foldism seen from a specific point of view. The photographs are printed with inkjet on cotton media with pure carbon pigments. “For me, these imaginary panoramas were made to reflect the unconscious landscapes that we carry within us. They are improvisations. They represent the architecture of the felt but unseen rhythms of the natural word,” says John. John has a BFA in art photography and art history, from the University of Arizona and an MFA in art photography from Tyler School of Art of Temple University. John’s work is represented in the collections of The Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago, the Museum Of Contemporary Art of Georgia, the Yale University rare prints collection, the Kling architectural photography collection Philadelphia, the San Francisco Camerawork artist's book collection, Clarence John Laughlin’s personal collection, and the Greenberg Traurig and Bunnen Collections, among others.
