About the Item

The Blue Marble is the first photograph of the full Earth seen by human eyes, December 7-19, 1972. The photograph is an iconic image from the Apollo 17 Moon Mission by NASA astronaut Harrison Schmitt. Since NASA first released Blue Marble, the image has become one of the most iconic pictures of the Earth ever taken with the planet revealed as a vast beautiful orb fitting neatly into the universe. The Blue Marble an image picked up by the environmental movement has become a symbol of global consciousness. The photograph remains the most famous image of Earth ever taken. This is a 14" x 11" vintage chromogenic color photograph on fiber paper, mounted on board and matted. Provenance: private collector. The value of vintage NASA photographs from the historic space missions, beginning in the 1960s, is increasing as the scientific community moves forward with innovation to explore distant galaxies, such as the development of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). *** From a distance of about 29,000 kilometers (18,000 miles) from the planet's surface the photograph was taken December 7, 1972 by the crew of the Apollo 17 with an attribution to Harrison Schmitt who was one of the astronauts who picked up the 70-millimeter Hasselblad Data Camera and fired off four shots of the Earth to capture its splendid entirety. NASA chose the second and clearest of the photos and presented it to the American public sixteen days later on December 23. The image was on most newspaper covers by Christmas. Astronaut Schmitt (b. 1935), the last surviving crew member from the Apollo 17 mission, was recently quoted: “How honored and privileged I feel to have participated in Apollo and to have the chance to take this picture that so many people find pleasing … and it reminds us how small we are.” Schmitt had said to Mission Control in 1972 nearly an hour after the Blue Marble shot was taken: “I’ll tell you, if there ever was a fragile-appearing piece of blue in space, it’s the Earth right now.” *** NASA photographs from 1966-75 captured the dusty, rocky, beautiful surfaces of the moon and the lunar experiments conducted by the astronauts. The views of the earth taken from the moon were a scientific and artistic feat, which inspired the popular imagination. Not only was the achievement of guiding a spacecraft to a lunar destination a miracle of engineering but also the process of photographing and relaying images back to earth was unprecedented technologically.
