Wisdom by Margaret Hicks, 1990, C-Print, Photography

1990

About the Item

Wisdom by Margaret Hicks presents an abstract scene, a corroded metal object attached to a wooden dock. The detailed textures of the rusted metal, worn wood, and aged rope are emphasized, creating something often overlooked into a beautiful abstract image. Wisdom is a 14 x 11 inch C-Print, mounted onto a 16 x 20 inch black board. This photograph is signed and dated on mount recto in pencil by artist. Dr. Margaret Katharine Hicks-Havins danced "magnificently into the mystic" October 7, 2021. Born Margaret Katharine H. Knott in Chicago, Illinois on January 15, 1935, she was fondly known by her Texas State College for Women "Demonstration school" pals as "Peggy." She grew up in Chicago, San Antonio, South Africa; Beirut, Lebanon, and Denton, Texas. Mother: Florence Elizabeth Struan Wallace (Knott-Robertson); and father: John Horatio Earle Knott were world travelers. She shared her life with husband Ronnie Lane Havins and son Scott Havins and his wife Wendi from 1980-present. Her family with Billie Eldon Hicks from 1955-1980 includes son Charles R. Hicks and wife Trisha; daughter Marjorie E. Joyner and husband Mark; daughter Anna Janine Maples and Steve. Her childhood "Dem School" sisters were Shirley Walker and Justine Ann Frank. Dr. Margaret K. Hicks-Havins was the Art Director at Navarro College from 1966-1991. She was a life-long member of MENSA, a two-time Fulbright-Hays Scholar from Centro Unificado Professional, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Ain Shams University, Cairo Egypt. Her B.S. and M.A Degrees in Art were from Texas Women's University, and her Ph.D. in Studio Art was from University of North Texas, Denton. Art Major, 1951-52, American University of Beirut, Lebanon. Dr. Hicks was an activist for freedom of speech and freedom to express art. She marched - picket sign in hand - 4 blocks to the Austin Capital front steps in 2015 at the age of 80 in support of Texas teachers. She stood in silence on stage as a guest speaker with duct tape across her mouth with the bold, black letters "Censored" at one art exhibit in protest. Her art works were accepted and shown in more than 75 juried art exhibitions primarily on the national level. She traveled extensively creating slide shows for Navarro College students whereby she relayed her adventures to include being a personal guest at the palace of Muhammad Anwar el-Sadat, Egypt's 3'rd president. Her college students painted murals on cars; painted community service workers on Corsicana fire hydrants, and created numerous Bulldog floats and gigantic competitive kites! Many students traveled to the "land site" on the west side of Corsicana to create works of art solely from natural materials found in the woods. Music festivals and poetry readings were conducted at "Doc Hicks'" land site. Dr. M.K. Hicks opened her home to exchange students who couldn't travel home during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Breaks. She paid for art supplies, film reels, and basic needs for starving artists each semester. She opened young minds and re-focused our eyes to see ART everywhere.
