About the Item

archival pigment print 26 x 19 inch image, $3500 Composed in a warm palette of white, pink, olive, tangerine, lavender, beige, umber, and deep blue, this photograph by artist duo Kahn & Selesnick combines the classically beautiful with hints of the carnivalesque. The image depicts a young woman donned in period dress and floating in a shallow pool. She is surrounded by flora. The image's visual qualities are a clear allusion to the tragic Ophelia. Part of Kahn and Selesnick's Dreams of a Drowning World series, this image is a single thread to be woven into a greater narrative. Notes on "Dreams of a Drowning World" The contemporary saga of collaborative duo, Kahn & Selesnick, continues to evolve as the artists release new images from Dreams of the Drowning World. The visual narrative speaks to the delicate balance between nature’s luscious beauty and the threat of its loss. The defeat illustrated between man and nature is stunningly beautiful as the characters are surrounded by abundant flora and objects of their past-time amidst the rising waters. The mid-19th century painting of a drowning Ophelia is referenced in the six foot tall prints of vertical God-like figures, appearing peaceful and dreamlike as they float in a motionless marsh. Smaller, arch-topped vignettes offer a reverent view on figures that lay in a transcendent state of surrender. This elaboration on the Truppe Fledermaus series is perhaps proof of the artist’s deeply imaginative, if cautionary, contemplation.

  • Cave 2
By Nicholas Kahn & Richard Selesnick
    Located in Hudson, NY
archival pigment print 40 x 40 inches unframed This contemporary, surrealist style photograph was printed by the artistic duo, Kahn & Selesnick, in 2010. The print is part of their 'Mar: Adrift on the Hourglass Sea' series which features a female protagonist in an extraterrestrial world. The characters, dressed in skin-tight blue suits, are alone on this foreign, barren planet blanketed rock formations. The two lone women make their way into an object, perhaps a portal to another dimmension. With this imagery, the artists entice an imaginative narrative where the viewer is left to conjure up their own story. About the series: "Mars: Adrift on the Hourglass Sea" is Kahn and Selesnick...

  • Horizon Fields 5 (Minimal Landscape Photo of Blue Skies and Golden Wheat Field)
    By Lependorf and Shire
    Located in Hudson, NY
30 x 30 inches Limited Edition Archival Pigment Prints edition of 25 This image is part of a series of abstracted landscape and ocean views by the Philadelphia based artists called 'Horizon Fields'. This square format image is an abstracted view of clear blue skies and golden wheat fields. About the work: The foundation for our work is the photographic image with the optimal quality of light. Selecting the interplay of composition, form, rhythm, and line is the focus for our imagery. Integrating these elements in the computer is the next stage in the process of merging our visual and intuitive sensibilities toward a completed vision. Different perceptual effects arise from recording the world in photographs as opposed to interpreting it in paint: Our goal is not to emulate painting. Conceptual work in all mediums has blurred the line between photographers who make art and artists who use photography. The digital medium has established itself in the natural continuum of art history and the ongoing relationship of art with technology. This work forces us to consider a more serene world while reminding us that no contemporary experience is unmediated; technology touches everything. The use of the computer as a tool does not create; it assists creativity resulting in a synthesis of disciplines to be realized as a limited edition. The combination of archival pigment inks on Crane Fine Art paper framed with archival mattes and backboards insures permanence in excess of 175 years. The creative process will always remain in the mind and the soul of the artist. About the artists: Stan Shire is Professor Emeritus and former chair...
