Juilliard Building, New York, 2023 by Roberta Fineberg is an 18” x 24" archival pigment print (on baryta paper) in an edition of 5. Signed, dated, and titled by the artist on front and back of the work.
A 19th Century warehouse now the Juilliard Building in New York City is on a cobblestone street in Tribeca. The Leonard St shop’s once dry goods manager and financier Augustus Juilliard and his wife Helen Juilliard who ran the business in lower Manhattan later became the benefactors of the Juilliard School (conservatory).
In the photographer’s words: “Although the warehouse was renovated decades ago the theatrical facade and original cobblestone street reminded me of a movie set. I was immediately drawn to the 19th century vibe and imagined old New York still alive and well, preserved, in a 21st century modern metropolis.”

Artist's Bio:
As a visual artist drawn to experimentation Roberta Fineberg (RF) explores diverse mediums and subjects, which include the ephemeral (butterfly series), stolen moments (documentary work), play, timelessness, the enduring, significance of matter, and allow for serendipity in her art and photography.
Selected exhibitions: Double Helix included at Sotheby’s New York (2022) auction Contemporary Discoveries preview show; Time Gallery, New York - aka Sojourner (2022); Phyllis Harriman Gallery (2022, 2020) - Art Student League studio shows; CADAF online art fair (2020); Gallery122 (2018) New York pop-up group show; Curate NY (2013) online group show; Paris Photo (2010), Photos, Femmes, Feminisme group show. Her photography is in private and public collections, with portraits of women writers at the Bibliothèque Nationale and Bibliothèque Marguerite Durand in Paris, France.
While a student in Paris in the 1980s exhibiting photographs in public spaces, RF began contributing editorial photography and articles to publications, landing a column (photos and writing) for The Saturday Review followed by freelance work in American Girl, Le Monde, Jeune Afrique, Paris Match, L’Officiel Femme, Ms., Weltwoche, Vanguardia, among others. In 1997 Macmillan published City Riders: A Story of Riding and Friendship, a story in words and pictures about three teenage girls who ride horses in New York City. Images licensed too through stock agencies Nonstock, Jupiter, and Getty, often for cover art in publishing: W.W. Norton, St. Martin’s Press, Harcourt, Bookspan, Simon & Schuster, etc. Print Regional Design Annual New York in 2003 awarded me in book jacket photography (cover art) for If Wishes Were Horses. Also award-winning: You Will Never Beat New York (2020) an experimental video, a love letter to the City, shot during the pandemic on a smartphone, receiving 14+ laurels from independent film festivals worldwide (2020-2021).
Based for three decades in New York City, Roberta Fineberg enjoys both the city and travel as a source for discovery.
