Mitchell Funk
Surreal Gas Station on a Foggy Night with Green Lights. Close Encounters

1977

About the Item

The same year, the iconic science fiction movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind was released, visionary still photographer Mitchell Funk shot this SciFi-like image. It's of an unearthly gas station in Atlanta that could easily double as a port for alien spacecraft. What is notable is how much empty space Funk leaves above the gas station kiosk that leads the viewer's eye upward. Creative lighting has always been a cornerstone in Funk's oeuvre. Typically, he would work for hours scouting the perfect location and then wait for the light to be magical. With "Surreal Gas Station on a Foggy Night" the shot came to him. While finishing an assignment for Life Magazine, Funk was driving back to his motel and suddenly, this surreal visual opportunity landed in his lap. The absence of humans and an unnatural eerie green light provoked Funk to slam on the breaks and capture the moment before people entered and brought the scene back to earth. This archival color photograph by fine art photographer Mitchell Funk is signed, dated and numbered 3/15, lower right recto. Other sizes are available and the fine art photograph is unframed and printed later. Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of " Color Photography" In 1970 he participated in one the first " Color Photography" shows at a major museum. Pioneering SciFi photographer Mitchell Funk experiments with altered realms of reality by juxtaposing two landscapes of unnatural color to form a never-before-seen original vision. A single silhouetted figure looks out on a day-glow yellow sea leading to a dreamscape of trees. The yellow of water is picked up in the trees to unify the different perspectives.
