In a trailer park amid a remote desert in the American West, a group of people of different characters and backgrounds are thrown together. Their dreams, desires and fears, woven into a micro-world of personal relationships and external reality, fill the universe of the artist’s narration; it is something artificial to the extent that we admit its stylization, and real to the extent to which we, as people, can identify with its general human level. Stefanie Schneider works within her installation using story as a potential encoded into a host of picture fragments without obvious connections. Each fragment can function as an independent image as well as a part of a story. It all depends on how much energy we can invest in a quest for the intersection of the individual segments.
The spectacular visual effect of Stefanie Schneider’s realizations is characteristic of her work and has earned recognition in the world of art; it is based on the use of expired Polaroid material. Work with technical faults generating an attractive optical shift in the surface of photographs should not, however, sideline the conceptual dimension of the exhibition. The clipped nature and fragmentation of reality and the role of representation: these are the subjects that are inherent in the discourse of the technical media in post-modernism. The 29 Palms, CA project presents these issues against a subtext of personal stories. Who are those in the film and in the photographs – film characters, actors, or people?
