In October 2018, Verena Prenner received a cigar box from a friend that he had found in his basement. Inside were two hundred original contact prints of large-format photographs, depictions of what appeared to be a colonial hunting trip in Africa. Personal notes on the back of the photographs indicated they had been taken in the Congo between 1904 and 1906 by Rudolph Grauer, an Austrian adventurer in Central Africa.
Grauer's main interest was in researching and hunting exotic mammals, reptiles, insects and birds for European museum collections — for example, the famous okapi from the Natural History Museum in Vienna. He is believed to have collected around 70,000 animal species. Verena Prenner wondered how much our perspective on Central Africa today has changed compared to Grauer's. She moved to the Congo for six months to find answers on her own. As the resulting photographs demonstrate, her original plan to be merely an observer soon evolved into a "participant test subject" confronted with cultural challenges, prejudices and stereotypes.

Verena Prenner
Verena Prenner develops the ideas for her photographic work out of her sociological research. This involves working with amateurs and occasional passengers and arranging them as stage settings to express individual reflections and notions of societies. Verena was born in Neunkirchen, Lower Austria, in 1982. She lives and works in Vienna, studied at the University of Art and Design Linz and at the Johannes Kepler University Linz (Sociology).
