About the Item
My “Tech Vanitas” photography series embraces our love for beautifully designed, vintage machines and anxiety over new technology. My still lifes clearly reference 17th Century Dutch vanitas paintings and their air of craft guilds, international trade, and luxury goods. At the same time, my carefully disheveled compositions of phonographs, clocks, and radios allude to slick advertising imagery. Finally, these contemporary still lifes reflect our nostalgia for obsolete tech and yearning for the latest enchanted gadgets.
These colorful photographs appeal to a broad audience and look fabulous in living rooms, conference rooms, and public spaces. The ViewMaster, floppy disks, and wax cylinder recording bring back fond memories, or fuel one’s curiosity. The addition of contemporary devices, such as the electric firefly lantern with BlueTooth, keeps the subject matter fresh and extends the appeal to younger viewers.
This photograph is an Archival Pigment Print on Cotton Fiber Paper, printed in a limited-edition of 10. The standard print sizes are 36 x 24” and 24 x 16” but custom sizes are available. The photograph is signed and numbered on the back and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Prints are sold unframed; framing may be arranged for an additional cost. Free shipping is available through January 1, 2024. You must apply code: FREESHIP.

Jeanette May is a photo-based artist using a critical, sometimes playful, approach to investigate representation. Early training as a painter is evident in her carefully arranged compositions and rich color palette. May’s photographs are constructed, staged, lit, and carefully considered. Her recent still life projects embrace technology, design, and obsolescence. May received her MFA in Photography from CalArts and her BFA in Painting from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. May’s photographs are exhibited in galleries and museums internationally, including New York City, Washington, DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto, Milan, Athens, Barcelona, and Shanghai. Her “Tech Vanitas” series appeared in the NY City Bryant Park/42nd Street subway station as part of the MTA Arts & Design Lightbox Project. She was commissioned by Audubon Magazine to create tech still lifes for an article on rare bird alerts and obsolete tech. May’s photographs were also published in Aesthetica Magazine, Barbara Magazine (Germany), Dodho Magazine, Lenscratch, and numerous photography journals. May has been awarded grants, fellowships, and residencies from the NEA Regional Artists’ Projects Fund, Brooklyn Arts Council, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Illinois Arts Council, Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, and Ms. Foundation.
