Hilliard Dean, '#5', color lithograph, 1970, edition not stated but small. Signed, titled, and annotated 'AP' in pencil. Dated 'June 11, 70' in pencil in the bottom right sheet edge. A fine impression, with fresh colors, on Grumbacher, heavy, cream wove paper; the full sheet with margins (3 7/8 to 4 1/4 inches); spot stain in the bottom center sheet edge, well away from the image, otherwise in very good condition. Printed by the artist.
Image size 14 1/4 x 16 3/8 inches (362 x 416 mm); sheet size 22 1/4 x 24 3/4 inches (565 x 610 mm).
Archivally matted to museum standards, unframed.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Hillard R. Dean (b. 1933) is a painter and printmaker of figurative and abstract works, active in the Washington DC area. Dean’s graphic works are in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. His work is referenced in 'Afro-American Artists, A Bibliographical Directory,' edited by Theresa Dickason Cederholm, Boston Public Library, 1973, and in 'Free Within Ourselves: African-American Artists in the Collection of the National Museum of American Art,' 1992.

ABOUT THE ARTIST Robert Vale Faro (1902-1988) was a well-known modernist architect and artist associated with the Chicago Bauhaus. He received his degree in architecture and design from the Armour Institute in Chicago and worked at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, from 1924-27, where he was influenced by Harry Kurt Bieg and Le Corbusier. Upon his return to Chicago, Faro worked with the important modernist Chicago architects George and William Keck under Louis Sullivan. Faro founded the avant-garde printmaking group Vanguard in 1945. The group counted Atelier 17 artists Stanley William Hayter, Sue Fuller, and Anne Ryan as New York members and Francine Felsenthal of Chicago. The Brooklyn Museum mounted a show of Vanguard artists' work in 1946, which subsequently toured several other institutions in the United States.
