Irwin
Toronto Portfolio “Slovenian Mother”

1989-95

About the Item

Original mixed media and collage, 1989-95. Edition of 70 signed and numbered impressions on Arches paper. Published by Visconti Fine Art. IRWIN is a political internationally acclaimed group of five Slovenian artists (Dusan Mandic, Miran Mohar, Andrej Savski, Roman Uranjek and Bort Vogelnik), primarily painters, and an original founding member of Neue Slowenische Kunst – a controversial political art collective along with the music group Laibach, the performance group Scipion Nasice Sisters Theater and the design section Novi kolektivizem (NK). Irwin’s art is complex and has a traumatic and provocative effect, because of it’s strong political and artistic connotations, including fascist, Soviet, religious, and Suprematist images. Two different approaches may be observed in the group in terms of their work. The first one is the emphasis that they place on collective group working rather than favoring the individuality of the artist. This is why the majority of the projects hold the groups name Irwin as the signature. The second approach of the groups work is the so-called retro-principle that is used. Here works become a collage of quotations and allusions to various sources such as iconography, past symbols and philosophical ideas. The artworks are made by number of media including paint, tar, books, dishes, Lego, silkscreens and many others, but they also created the performances. Every one of their artworks has the groups monogram, often on a metal plate instead of traditional artists signatures. This portfolio got its name from being made in Toronto. The artwork is woven with many symbols of a war, and the name “Slovenian Mother” is justified with a depiction of a military nurse, a hero in a war, who was helping the Slovenian solders.

  • Untitled
    By Mimmo Paladino
    Located in Ljubljana, SI
Original color woodcut, 1992. Edition of 100 signed and numbered impressions on Arches paper. Mimmo Paladino is an Italian contemporary sculptor, painter, muralist and printmaker. He attended the Liceo Artistico di Benvenuto (Benevento Art School) from 1964 to 1968, when minimalism and conceptualism dominated the international art scene, which had effects on his art. He was also a part of Transavantgarde – the artistic movement with the neo-expressionist resurgence that swept through Italy in the 1980s. Paladino seeks his inspiration from both the ancient and the modern – from Egyptian, tribal, and classical artworks to the modern painting and sculpture. In his compositions we can often see a figure in combination with the signs like crosses, and techniques like the application of gold leaves, a symbol of eternity, borrowed from Christian iconography, as well as the hieratic pose of Byzantine figures and the gestural quality of that culture’s rites. Paladino himself admits to being “an artist of the south, but of the darkest, most mysterious south, and this is why I find poetic sensations that belong to me in certain aspects of Nordic culture, why I can make a totally black painting...

Ed Paschke BAD, 1991 Silkscreen and Lithograph on Rising Mirage Paper, accompanied by documentation Pencil signed, titled "BAD", and annotated "Trial Proof" on the front 22 × 20 inches Unframed This work is a unique Trial Proof on Rising Mirage Paper, pencil signed by the artist and annotated "Trial Proof" the very first impression, aside from the regular edition. It is accompanied by the tirage sheet, with the biography of the artist and a description of the work. (see photos). As such it is a rare impression. Published by Chicago Serigraphic Workshop and Artco, Incorporated Ed Paschke Biography: Ed Paschke was born in Chicago where he spent most of his life as an important painter. He was initially associated in the late 1960s with the second generation of Chicago Imagists who called themselves The Hairy Who. He received his B.F.A. from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 1961 and his M.F.A. in 1970. Between degrees he lived for a time in New York where he easily came under the influence of Pop art, in part, because of his interests as a child in animation and cartoons. His fascination with the print media of popular culture led to a portrait-based art of cultural icons. Paschke used the celebrity figure, real or imagined, as a vehicle for explorations of personal and public identity with social and political implications. Although his style is representational, with a loose affiliation to Photorealism, Paschke’s art plays...
